PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Sunnyside” Home and Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Sunnyside (old site): 1938 Feb. 28 Research made by Susan R. Morton Cemetery Location: 6.5 miles north of Dumfries, off from Route #642 Prince William Co., Virginia DATE: 1712. [the house site] OWNERS: 1712, Stephan De Lisle 1740, Thomas Dent 1819, James Scott 1845, Jesse Davis 1904, (Sold by Court) Harry Avery 1921, E.M. Briggs, now owned by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Briggs. [1938] DESCRIPTION: There is so little of the original place left that it is difficult to describe. Part of the present house is made of logs and is supposed to be at least one hundred and fifty years old [1938], but it is so utterly changed (the new house is practically built over it) that it seemed useless to make out an architectural sheet, there is not a single feature of the old house left in sight. There are a few ancient trees in the yard to the south, and some six hundred rods southeast of the present house is the site of what was very likely the original homestead. This was in ruins some years ago, and was cleared away by new owners. This is described as being of logs, weatherboarded over, a porch across the entire front, and stone chimneys at each end. There is no trace of this left, and the site is now a cornfield. About three hundred rods southeast of the house is the graveyard. It is much overgrown with blackberry and poison oak, and some of the stones are broken. There are many graves there besides the ones whose inscriptions are given, these are marked by ordinary field stone only. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The neighborhood in which this old home was located was one of much interest. Not far from the Ewell home, “Bel Aire”, and on the road that led from Dumfries to Occoquon, it must have been the scene of much life of that part of the county. Directly across the road from this place was the home of Parson Weems’ son, before that belonging to Alexander Henderson, the Dumfries Merchant. This is also the home of a son of the Reverend James Scott, first Rector of Quantico Church at Dumfries. The following extract shows the beginning of this homesite: “This Indenture made the second day of October, in the fourteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord, George the Second, by the grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and the year of our Lord God, one thousand, seven hundred and forty, between Stephen De Lisle of Hamilton Parish and County of Prince William, of the one part, and Thomas Dent of Overwharton Parish of Stafford County of the other part --- Granted to Delisle from the Proprietor’s Office, 1712 --- Yielding and paying therefore the yearly rent of one ear of Indian corn at the Feast of Saint Michael, the Archangel.” Below are the inscriptions found in the graveyard at “Sunnyside”: In memory of Clarinda wife of Jesse Scott Died November 19, 1836 Aged 56 years In memory of Jesse Scott who departed this life July 9, 1826 aged 57 years In memory of W.
