Col. Samuel Hawes Prince William County Certified by Lt. John Harkley that John Lanham served 18 months in the Detachment and received no pay for the months served but was a brave and faithful soldier given 3rd January, 1787 at Camp Round. The bearer John Lanham has been in the Alms House for sometime just in order to have a ball extracted from him which he received in an action before Camden in 1781. Signed: William Smith Stevens-Surgeon at Alms House--Charleston, SC, July 4, 1788. I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that John Lanham, aged about 25 years, late a private in a detachment of the Virginia Line, commanded by Lt. Col. Hawes and whose pay was at the rate of 24 pounds per annum was disabled in the service of the United States by a wound on his left side, which has rendered his leg and thigh almost useless; and that he is allowed the sum of 18 pounds yearly, commencing from the first of Jan. 1786.
