Messrs Herring & Meetze have sold four horses to a Baltimore firm at a good figure. Rev. T. D. D. Clark is announced to preach in the Gospel tent next Sunday at 8 p.m. Mrs. J. S. Weaver, living near town, is convalescent from a severe attack of malarial fever. Mr. W. F. Lee, living near Bull Run, has been quite sick with malarial fever, but is better. W. N. Merchant, Jr., won the high jump at Berryville this week on Dunlop's Navajor at 6 feet. Mr. Jas. Birkett has sold "Birmingham," containing 25 acres to Mr. A. O. Portner at $4, 700. We understand Mrs. H. B. Lewis leaves this week for Richmond for treatment under Dr. McGuire. Mr. J. L. Moser has rented the store room in the Nicol building, next door to the new postoffice. Mr. Geo. E. Maddox, we understand, has sold his store-house and business to Mr. J. Wilbur Ayres for $4,000. Mr. Chas. A. Barbee, deputy sheriff had a sever attack of acute indigestion last week. For a while his life was in great danger. Dr. McGill has written that he has greetly improved by his vacation during August and will preach in the tent Sunday, Sept. 2, 8 p. m. Dr. Hamner expects to be absents for the next two Sundays. He will go in camp with friends on Muskoka Lake, Ontaria, Canada. Mrs. Ira E. Cannon lost her pocketbook, containing $15 last week. It was found by Joseph Butler, the barber at the Prince William and returned. There will be a dancing picnic at Osburn's wood, near Nokesville Saturday, Aug. 25 and one at Linton's ford near the Catholic Institute, Wednesday, Aug. 29. Dr. Jno. H. Iden operated on Miss Cora Hottle, daughter of Mr. Wm. Hottle, in Washington hospital on Tuesday for appendicitis, also on Miss Spitzer of Milford, this county--the latter operation is professionally known as nephrorrhaphy. It is said that Mr. C. Jones Rixey intends to establish a national bank with a capital stock of $25,000 at Rosslyn in Alexandria county. This makes about a dozen banks and branches in Mr. Rixey's catalogue of banks. Dr. John H. Iden, who has been home a few days on a vacation was summoned to his ship, "Florida," last Wednesday night to Oyster Bay. We believe the President is going to have a little military show on labor day. Miss Jennie Smith, known as the Railway Evangelist, will begin as series of meetings in the tent here next Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock and each evening during the week at 7:45. Her sermons will be preceded by a song service. If weather is unfavorable services will be held in the Methodist church. The Warrenton Virginian says: "Readers of this paper will recall the arrest by Mr. T. S. Meredith of three bank and post office robbers encamped in the woods near Gainesville, about a year ago. Their arrest was followed by conviction and a few days ago Mr. Meredith received the check for the amount of the reward. While Allen Davis and Albert Powell, two young colored men were engaged in a little friendly bout in Mr. Hynson's new store room, the latter backed into the open cellar door and fell about 9 feet, landing on his head. About the only damage done was a hole cut in Albert's head about the size of a walnut, necessitating several stitches. August 24, 1906 continued Mr. James M. Barbee, Jr., of Richmond was in town this week. Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Weir are spending a few days in Fauquier. Mrs. G.W. Payne has been spending the week at Virginia Beach. Miss Lillie Hixson left Monday for a two weeks' visit in Maryland. Mr. E. B. Giddings and family have been spending the week in Loudoun. Miss Nellie Maddox was a guest of friends in Washington on Sunday last. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Prescott have returned from their trip to the seashore. Mr. H. F. Tompkins, accompanied by his family, is in town spending his vacation. Mr. E. L. Martin of New York city was the guest of Mr. Geo. E. Maddox on Sunday last. Miss Bessie Gold of Hagerstown, Md., spent a week at the home of Mr. H. D. Wenrich. Miss Estella Allison of Washington has been visiting Mrs. H. D. Wenrich for a few days. Dr. Friench Simpson of Galveston, Texas, spent the week's end with his aunt, Mrs. J. B. Johnson. Miss Louise Longwell leaves to-morrow for West Virginia where she expects to teach in the public schools. Miss Louise Willcoxon of Washington, D. C., was the guest of her cousin Miss Emma Johnson on Friday last. Mr. Geo. E. Maddox and daughter, Miss Ethel, attended the Baptist Association at North Fork on Sunday last. Mr. F. L. Cox, associate editor of the Altoona, (Pa.) Daily Mirror, is spending the week with his family here. Mrs. Dr. Ewell of Greene and Miss Mable Ish of Neabsco are guests of Mrs. Westwood Hutchison this week. Miss Nellie Badger, Miss Isabelle Clegg, Mrs. Bright and son and Mrs. John Lamb attended the Loudoun Camp Meeting last week. Mr. and Mrs. Baker H. Sweet of Washington, D.C., are visiting their aunts' the Misses Bushong at Nesteldown on Fairview avenue. Mrs. J. L. Griffin and grand-daughter, Miss Gertrude E. Laycock of Alexandria have returned home after spending a pleasant visit their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fair of Canova, Va. Miss Georgie Robinson of Orange and Miss Clara Bowers of Alexandria were guests of Miss Irene Devers this week. They visited Culpeper and Orange on Wednesday accompanied by Miss Lena Lynch. A party consisting of Mrs. Barbour, Mrs. Willis, Miss Mayree, Miss Julia Nicol, Miss Maymie Gulick and Mr. Aylett Nicol drove through the country last week to Waterford, where the Baptist Association met. They report a fine trip. Mrs. George C. Round with little Emily is expected home from her Northern trip to-morrow.
