Manassas Journal, July 20, 1906 (Prince William Co., Virginia) -------------------------------------------------- July 20, 1906 Mr. T. S. Holsinger has been quite ill for some time. Mrs. O. P. Merritt, who has been quite sick, is improving. Capt. E. Nelson, who is in a hospital in Washington, continues to improve. Mr. O. P. Merritt has been awarded the contract for building the handsome new school house at Occoquan. Mr. Jessie M. Bell has bought the Hibbs & Giddings farm on the Brentsville road containing 63 acres. Price $1500. Mr. C. A. S. Hopkins has sold his property, West of town, known as the Hughes place, containing five acres, to Mr. F. C. Rorabaugh. Mr. Lon Muddiman, who is engaged in bridge building near Hurricane, W. Va., had the misfortune to get his leg broken about 10 days ago. Mr. W. M. Rice, who went to a Washington hospital last week where he underwent a rather serious operation, is doing as well as could be expected. Mr. Howard found some money behind box No. 10 the first day of the show. By describing the same and applying to the secretary it will be returned. The services rendered by Chief of Police, Capt. Fauquhar, at the Horse Show, and Chief Marshal J. T. Harnsberger and Marshal J s. F. Gulick have been warmly praised. Mr. Henry F. Lynn of Catharpin was taken violently ill last Monday with cholera morbus and for some time it was feared that it would be fatal. He has about recovered, however. Mr. Wade Goodwin, who recently bought the transfer business of Mr. Isaiah C. Cornwell, together with the horses and wagons, had the misfortune last Wednesday afternoon to lose one of the horses from colic. He had just paid $150 for the horse. The principals of Manassas Institute announce that the primary and grammar grades of the Institute will be continued as before. In conjunction with Mrs. M. S. Moffett, supervising principal of the Ruffner School, a normal course for teachers will be established. Announcements in regard to the work of the high school will be made later. The Warrenton Virginian of this week says the contract for a steel bridge near The Plains, has been awarded to Mr. John R. Tillett of Manassas, and for the concrete abutments to Mr. W. B. Baker of the same place. Cost of the bridge, $470; abutments, $285. Only $150 of this is paid out of road funds, the balance by private parties. ACCIDENT AT HORSE SHOW While riding at one of the races Wednesday afternoon Edward Gray, a young man from Greenwich, mounted on Mr. Smallwood's horse, was thrown by the horse falling at one of the jumps and a horse following struck him with his feet just as the young man was rising and hurt him perhaps seriously as he was injured about the head and stomach. Physicians and a trained nurse took him in charge and he was brought to town and remained at Mr. Ira C. Reid's that night. The next morning he was taken home, leaving here on the train. As he left on the stretcher he was conscious and did not seem to be suffering, though quite badly injured. Miss Harvey of Baltimore is the guest of Mrs. Dr. Newman. Miss May Farris of Washington is visiting Miss Josie Larkin. Mr. Owen Lynch of Richmond was in town for the horse show. Mrs. Geo. W. Leach of Washington is visiting Mrs. C. L. Hynson. Miss Olive Johnson of Washington is the guest of Miss Lillie Hixson. Miss Alice Glascock of Marshall is visiting her sister, Mrs. T. F. King. Miss Emma Hamner spent Tuesday in the city, sight-seeing with a friend. Mrs. L. O. Lynn of Woolsey is visiting her daughter, Mrs. F. J. Jones of Manassas. Mrs. George Craig of Loudoun spent several days this week with Mrs. J. N. Badger. Miss Rosa Duffey of Alexandria is visiting her friends, Misses Bonner, at Mt. Pleasant. Mr. and Mrs. Ashby and brother are staying with Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Jones during the horse show. Miss Moselle Springle of Front Royal and Miss May Lee of Strasburg are the guests of Mrs. Will Goods. Mrs. John Gibson and grand-daughter, Miss Ada Kincheloe of Upperville are guests of Mrs. R. S. Hynson this week. Mr. Nicholas Hedinger and Watt Jones of Remington were guests of Mr. F. J. Jones one night during the horse show. Miss Irene Bast and Miss Mabel Shreckise of Washington were the guests of Mrs. G. W. Payne during the horse show. Miss Huldah L. Rauch who went to the seashore for her health has returned to her mother's, Mrs. T. S. Holsinger, much improved. Mrs. A. G. Bateman and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. F. Ludwig and Miss C. C. Batemen of Washington, attended the Manassas Horse Show and also payed her sister, Mrs. A.
