An examination of the young gentlemen that attend said School, was held on Saturday the Second instant; in the presence of us, the Subscribers, when the abilities of the Teacher and the great improvement of the Scholars in the different branches of science, abovementioned, (until you come to Algebra, in which none of them had made a beginning) were displayed greatly to the satisfaction of us all -- we cannot help adding, that those parents who have boys of eleven years of age, or upwards, and who wishes them to be educated in any of the above-enumerated branches of Science, will never repent, but greatly rejoice, that they sent them to Mr. GEOLRICK to be educated; his conduct; and behaviour appearing to us to be extremely emplerary, which seems also to influence that of his pupils. SIR, You will very much oblige me by giving this letter birth in your paper. I shall be in town in a few days and will pay you for it. Your obedient servant, Q. RATCLIFFE August 5, 1796 To JOHN MADDOX, on Kettle run Pragmatical SIR, I have lately thought never to have had any further correspondence with you at any rate, believing you to be in possession of every Diabolical principal of which human nature is suseptible, and that you have for some time past under the cloak of sanctity, and religion, carried many of your hellish schemes into execution, to the great disadvantage of many honest and well meaning people. I have heard of your tricks and quirks, ever since I have been in this State; but as long as the practice of them did not affect me, I did not give myself any concern about them; but I have a very considerable time observed that I have been included in the number of those you meant to exercise your deception on. BILLY MADDOX through your instigation, has instituted a suit against me -- for what neither of you know, but you expect to get something of the fellow at the end of the year, this is another of your dam’d rascally tricks to extort it from him. I hear it has been ineditated between you and him for some time past you infernal scoundrels, to get my Character from Maryland; you pitiful trifling rascal. I defy you and all your degenerate race to do your worst. I am come to a pretty pass to have my character called in question by such Insignificant Villians as either of you; My Father was never yet accused of supporting his family on the Sheep, Hogs and Beeves of his neighbours, neither did my Uncle run away from Maryland for stealing a fluke hoe. These things may appear dark and mysterious, but if I am urged it may happen, I may be able to give you an explanation of the two preceeding clauses. That no reliance can be placed on such a fellow as you, is evident, for the following reason--that, whearas you were bred among a set of people of the most abandoned principles--your acquisitions during your residence in the family, were exactly similar to theirs; and the small efforts that were maid in sending you to school, were ineffectual, as the Devil himself your own intimate correspondent, would never with all his abilities be able to give you a knowledge even of the spelling book. From this debauched Education I image your damned principles at present took root, it s very reasonable to suppose it to be the case; as it is a universal maxim, that as a child is train’d up, so he will continue when old: Nay, it is certain no obligation can bind against nature, for a Fox will love a goose till, although his skin be script over his ears for it. And you (a common cheat) I find will follow your old trade of tricking your friend, notwithstanding all your promises and principles of honur, honesty, and good faith. I am sorry I have desended so low as to write to such a selfconceited, hypocritical, and pusillanius rascal, as you are. And if your conduct dont verify the last epithat, I will bring you to the charge: In the mean time, I shall continue to be yours with about as much love as the Devil has for holy water. Q. RATCLIFFE Verbatim. * * * * LANDS FOR SALE; By Virtue of a Power of Attorney, which is of record in Prince William County, from Mrs. CATHARINE DOUGLAS of Scotland, and her Daughter, The subscriber will sell that valuable and very productive FARM on Cedar run in the said County which is conveyed by ROBERT BRENT, deceased and ANN his Wife, to the executors JAMES DOUGLAS for the purposes in his will mentioned being part of the well known Brenton Tract. Also my students shall be exercised in writing, reading, public speaking, orthography, the etymologies of English words derived from the Latin and Greek, and those who may be somewhat advanced in the classics shall be instructed in the English Grammer, which is the mode adopted at Prince-Town College. On the 15th of June and the 16th of December, my school will be subjected to an examination, when gentlemen unbiassed, independent, free from faction, and of litery information, will both honour and oblige me by attending. On the days subsequent to the examintions, the students will exhibit in public speaking, and the vacations will ensue immediately: the first three weeks, and the second four. The prices of country produce and of commodities in general much inhanced, and the nominal value of money proportionably depricated, I have determined to raise my price of tuition, for the present year, from six to seven pounds per ann. one half to be paid in advance, and the balance at the expiration of the year. Apprehending it might be misrepresented to my prejudice I take the liberty, by way of anticipation, to announce to the public, that having from experience descoverd that the rewards of teaching afford a very precarious subsistence, I have resolved to introduce agriculture upon my farm; but have remployed a man to superintend that business for me; whence I may and do, here pledge my honor, that I will not in consequence thereof, submit to any diversion of attention from my school -- inasmuch as from a particular fondness of classical studies, notwithstanding the dissuations of some connections and friends, I attached myself at an early period of life to the profession in which I have embarked, conceiving it to be both honourable and eminently important to mankind: The public may rationally conclude that I shall continue in the prosecution of it, probably throughout life, and where I now am, let my encouragement be great or small. Various decent and reputable families in the neighbourhood, and particularly on this side of Broad Run, have prepared themselves on my account for the reception of boarders, whom they will accommodate upon the most reasonable terms that can be expected. The period for which Mr. THOMAS RUSSELL and myself contracted to take boarders in co-partnership being now at an end, I shall undertake to accommodate a few upon my own footing, at the rate of eighteen Pounds per ann. exclusive of bedding, and mending, except that of stockings; one half to be paid in advance, and the residue at the conclusion of the year. The morals of the youths shall be strictly overlooked and those whom may live with me, shall whilst the length of the nights will admit of it, be obliged to attend to their studies by candle-light. JAMES CAMPBELL January 1, 1796 * * * * AUCTION BUSINESS, The Subscriber having obtained a licence to sell at PUBLIC AUCTION in the County of Prince William, and the Town of Dumfries, and having given proper bond and security for the performance of the said Trust -- according to the “act of Congress for laying duties on property sold at Auction.” Gives Notice to the Inhabitants of the said County and Town, that he is solely impowered to sell at Public Action, & that every Body who wants to dispose of property by Public Sales (except as it is excepted in the said act of Congress) must apply to him or incur the penalty of four hundred dollars exclusive of the duty payible to the United States. FR. GALVIN de Bernoux Sept. 10, 1795 * * * * Eight Dollars Reward. RUNAWAY from the subscriber living in Fauquier county in Leads Manor, about the 29th Dec a Negro Man named BOB. He is about five feet, four or five inches high of a brownish complection, has a scar bellow one of his knees and a part of one on his fore fingers cut off -- Had on when he went away a short brown Fustran Coat and Black velvet breeches, and carried with him a new suit of white Kersey and many other articles of dress I do not recallect. It is supposed he is lurking about Dr. G. GRAHAM’s quarter, in Prince William where his mother lives, or has got to upper Malbro’ in Maryland where he was born. The above reward will be paid, to any person who will secure said negro in any goal so that I get him again, and all reasonable charges paid if delivered at home.
