A new constructed Amphibicious Cariage. The Subscriber takes this method to inform his friends and the community at large that he has completed his experiment. This carriage is of the full size, capable of accommodating three persons; and is impelled or impeded solely by the conductor, who rides in the carriage, which is turned to the right or left, fast or slow, at his opinion; and is turned about with as much case, and in less time than is possible for a span of horses to do. The head stands on six arch poasts which is shifted from its standing, with dispatch and case, by a performance of the rider into a perpendicular sail which extends about two feet into the air, and is averted, in several directions, as occasion requires and is not detrimental to traveling against the wind. There is erected, extending from the frontispiece, the figure of Fame, which takes it flight with the movement of the carriage, and what causes the flight of the wings, or the movement of the caraige, is imperceptible to the spectators. To specify more particulars is superfluous, and too tedious to enumerate. All persons desirous of seeing this extraordinary and singular piece of Mechanism, may have the satisfaction of seeing the same, and all its performances as above specified, for the acknowledgment of one quarter of a dollar each at the house of GIDEON BADCOCK, in South Kingston, on the 25th day of January 1796 if fair weather. As the Proprietor has been at a very great expence in this experiment, he has been prevailed on, by a number of worthy citizens, who are ever ready to advance and promote any of the scientific branches, which may rebound to the public weal, induces him to promulgate this work in this town, as he expects soon to proceed on a journey to the westward. I am the public’s most obedient, humble servant, ABIJAH BADCOCK, jun. P.S. If the weather should be stormy, the next fair day.--Snow on the ground will not obstruct the movement--which will commence at twelve o’clock. * * * * THEATRICAL SOCIETY. On Saturday, Evening February 13th will be performed, at the THEATRE DUMFRIES, the much admired Comedy called SHE STOOPS TO CONQUIER, or, The Mistakes of a Night, to which will be added the Favorite Farce of THE KING AND MILLER, of MANSFIELD. * * * * Whereas GAVLAN DE BERNOUX and ELIZABETH, his wife have been at a great expence to erect and fill their Ice House, They propose to supply their neighbours (on subscription only) for the next season or as long as their ice will last and no longer, at the following rates of subscription (as no ice will be delivered in any other manner whatsoever without exception.) Two neighbours may join for one subscription by entering both their names in the subscription paper, subscribers will use their ice in their own houses and will forfeit their subscription if they should send any to their neighbours, which upon being proved will deprive them of getting any more ice unless they should subscribe anew. Half of the subscription money to be paid on the first day of May and the other half on the first day of July next. The subscribers only will be allowed to put meat, butter, &c. in the ice-house by paying four pence halfpenny for every thing, not weighing more than twelve pounds; any thing above will pay nine pence, and a quarter of beef, will pay one shilling, before it is taken out. JOHN CANNOFF, LANGHORNE DADE, WM. FARROW, and ANN ATWELL, adm’x, and CHARLES ATWELL, adm’r of THOMAS ATWELL, dec’d. his securities, to meet him on or before the first Monday in next month, in order to have those heavy and old accounts finally investigated, that the proper steps may be taken by the subscriber in a satisfactory manner to all parties concerned, to endeavor to make the ballance, if any, so adjusted and settled by Gentlemen, who will attend for that purpose at Mr. WILLIAM’s Tavern, on his part as for the subscriber, he flatters himself that his accounts being plain, short and concise, that they will not take up much of the Gentlemen’s time, as he has endeavoured to be as explicet as the nature of the business would admit. The Subscriber’s tedious, and dangerous illness during the Winter and Spring has prevented him from attending to this or any other business, to the great and manifold injury of himself and family. Having partly recovered, and being determined to bring matters to a speedy conclusion, shall, in consequence thereof, pursue all proper means and methods that the laws of this Country has invested him with, for the recovery of all ballance of taxes, levies and clerk’s fees that may be due at the date hereof, with all costs, interest and damages that may arise thereon; therefore, he requests those indebted to him to come and make speedy payment of their respective ballance, or rely on the consequences. Few, if any, he believes in this, as well in the adjoining Counties but what has heard, and some know that he has suffered from July 11, 1791 until Jan. 15, 1796 which put an end to his last. Those who have accounts against him are desired to bring them in, that they may also be adjusted, and finally settled. As the Subscriber in a pecular manner holds himself no longer under any debt or obligation whatsoever, from the date hereof, to either principals or securities aforesaid, he therefore hopes that due attention should be given to the above notice, for the sooner this business is fixed the better for both parties. July 7, 1796 * * * * FOR SALE, The lot and improvements at Fauquier Court House, which for several years has been ocupied as a tavern or rather an ordinary, together, with all the household, kitchen, and bar furniture, and which is now furnished and which with the addition of a very few articles would be sufficient for carrying on the Business on the most executive and lucrative plan. This house is so generally known not only for an uncommon run of neighbouring custom, on Court and other public days, but likewise and more especially as a noted stand for travellers as to render it unnecessary to urge anything on that subject, as an inducement for purchasing. With respect to the convenience of the house and other improvements, the Quantity and quality of the furniture, as it is presumable that any person inclineable to purchase, will choose to see for himself, a description is unnecessary. I shall only add that one half the purchase money will be required on making a legal conveyance (which I am ready to do and give possession any moment) the other half to be paid in seven equal anual payments with satisfactory security. With legal interest from the date til sold, JOHN TURNER Fauquier Court House, July 1796 * * * * NOTICE. Whereas the Rev. NATHANIEL GREAVES, hath for some time past in a publication of his forewarned all persons from purchasing a bond given by him to me, for the sum of sixteen pounds, which he says he paid; I do pronounce the saying of the Clergyman to be palpable falsity, and that I never received a shilling of his money in payment of his bond or otherwise, and that we never had since our acquaintance, any other dealings than the purchase he made of me, for which I took his bond, and from that taking of the bond, to the present moment, we have not changed five words one with the other; when the bond become due, or from after, I sent to him to come and take it up, which he did not do, but shortly after made his publication; at which time I suspect the Doctor’s head was as full of his religion and accumlative views, as a Quack Doctors box newly fitted up from the Drugist’s Shop. Those proceedings of his with many others I could mention, similar to this, ought to be a caution and guard to every person that may fall in his way. And if the Curmudgeon thinks he is unjustly burthened with the above assertions , let him bring forward proof to acquit himself. W M. POWELL.
