Biography of Robert C. Brown - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 Robert C. BROWN - son of Michael and Catherine BROWN, who were born in this county, was born her August 20, 1821. His grandfather settled in what is now Pulaski (then Montgomery) county in 1746, and the farm has been in the possession of the family ever since. There was evidently at one time an Indian village near the present residence of Robert C. as from his earliest recollection there have been bones plowed up, unquestionably Indian bones. The farm has also a mound of stone, the burial place of some chief, or a relic of the prehistoric Mound Builders. Near the farm the pioneers erected a fort for protection from Indians, and the grandmother of Robert C., while gathering greens one day, saw Indian signs, which led her to feign weariness and return to her home just in time to prevent the Indians cutting her off from escape to the fort or the house and making her prisoner. Michael BROWN was a soldier in the 1812 war, and for services rendered received a land patent, located land in Missouri, and then gave it to one of his grandchildren. Robert C. BROWN was a member of the second Virginia Regiment of Engineering Corps during the civil war. Near the head of Sinking Creek, Craig County, Virginia, March 19, 1846, he married Catherine, daughter of James and Jane ROSS. Her parents were born in Montgomery county, and she was born in Craig county, March 30, 1823. Robert C. BROWN and wife are the parents of: Ollie I., April 10, 1851; Charles W., April 8, 1853; James M., June 17, 1857; Catherine Jane, January 5, 1861; Walter C., February 22, 1864; Robert Alexander, August 22, 1867.
