Biography of Henry Anderson Carper - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 HENRY ANDERSON CARPER - Born in Botetourt county, Virginia, May 11, 1846, was eight years old when his parents, Isaac and Elizabeth A. (HANEY) CARPER, took up their residence in Pulaski county. When war between the states was inaugurated he was but 15 years of age, but in 1863 he volunteered for provost duty under Captain BOSANG. The company disbanded in 1864 and he then joined an engineering corps under Captain McCAULEY, and continued in the service till the war closed. Mr. CARPER kept the ferry at Ingle Bridge some three months after the close of the war, and then attended school for some time. He then learned the trade his father had been following since his settlement in Pulaski county, that of shoemaking, which has been his calling ever since. His father has been identified with the best interest of Pulaski county now for thirty years. In this county, December 24, 1867, were recorded the marriage vows of Henry Anderson CARPER and Mary Elizabeth DOUTHAT, and their children are seven, born: Mable C., September 27, 1868; John I., May 4, 1870; Patrick Henry, June 3, 1872; William R., June 5, 1875; M. Kate, April 13, 1877; Nellie R., June 15, 1880; Jesse, April 27, 1882. John H. and Margaret (BURKE) DOUTHAT are the parents of Mary E., wife of Mr. CARPER, and she was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, December 22, 1848. In 1873 Henry A. CARPER received the appointment of deputy sheriff, and has served ever since, and is still the efficient incumbent of the office. Newbern, Pulaski county, Virginia, is his postoffice address.
