Biography of Joseph H. Chumbley - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 JOSEPH H. CHUMBLEY - Leading merchant at New River Bridge, largely interested in church and school work; and identified with all the best interests of Pulaski county, was born in this county November 7, 1844. Asa H. CHUMBLEY, his father, was born in this county in 1808, and his grandfather, William CHUMBLEY, settled here in the first years of the present century, coming from Amelia county, Virginia, and his mother, Eliza (HUDSON) CHUMBLEY, born in 1808, came from Augusta county about 1830. In Montgomery county, Virginia, January 16, 1867, Joseph H. CHUMBLEY and Ella H. SHELL were united in marriage, and to them have been born three children: Eula, February 16, 1869; Anna L., May 2, 1871; Robert E. Lee, February 27, 1879. The wife of Mr. CHUMBLEY was born in Montgomery county, June 22, 1846, daughter of William P. and Eliza J. SHELL, born in Montgomery county in 1825. George H. and William A. CHUMBLEY, brothers of Joseph H. were both soldiers of the Fourth Virginia Infantry in the war between the states. George was wounded at Chancellorsville, and William at Mine Run. Joseph H. CHUMBLEY served in the Ninth Virginia Battalion of Cavalry, who had the honor of being General Lee's body guard and escort, and were participants in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and many subsequent engagements. Mr. CHUMBLEY is now serving as a notary public in Pulaski county, and has been four years magistrate. His address is New River P.O., Pulaski county, Virginia.
