Biography of James L. Dudley - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 James L. DUDLEY -- is a son of Ransom DUDLEY, who was born in Surry county, North Carolina, December 2, 1792, and is still living. The wife of Ransom DUDLEY was Jane LYON, and she died very suddenly about seven years ago, at the age of eighty-seven years. Their son James L. was born in Surry county, North Carolina, July 23, 1819, but came with them to Pulaski county in his childhood, and was raised in this county. His first wife was Harriet J. PRATT, and their children were eight: G.M., born November 28, 1842; C.T., October 16, 1844, deceased; J.R., July 23, 1846; J.H., March 25, 1849; M.E., May 4, 1850; N.S., 1852; H.J., 1854; H.M., 1857. In Wythe county, February 27, 1864, James L. DUDLEY and Mary J. KERKNER were wedded, and their son Walter F. was born January 8, 1867. The birth of Mary J. KERKNER was in Montgomery county, Virginia. June 9, 1828, and she is a daughter of James KERKNER, who moved from Montgomery to Pulaski county, and died there. James L. DUDLEY was a member of the Reserves, enlisted to defend their homes from war's ravages. He served four months, and was in one engagement. His oldest son was in the Confederate army from the beginning to the close of the struggle, and came home unharmed. He is now a conductor on the New River Railroad. Another son was in the service, and was slightly wounded at the Sharpsburg (Maryland) fight. He was with Jackson when that gallant general fell in the battle of Chancellorsville, and was taken sick soon after, removed to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and there died. James L. DUDLEY is a skilled workman with the tools of a blacksmith, and has invented a wheel brace for buggies and wagons that is of great service.
