Biography of R. S. Dudley - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 R.S. DUDLEY-- son of William and Mary S. (DEAUTHREDGE) DUDLEY, was born in 1835, and entered the Confederate army, as a member of the Pulaski Guards, in February, 1861. He served in these Guards for one year, and then went into active service for the remainder of the war, and was sent to the front. He went from Richmond to take part in an engagement at Harpers Ferry, then up the Potomac, fighting and skirmishing as they went, to reinforce Johnson, under whose command he fought at the battle of Manassas, and saw the Federal troops routed. The regiment to which he was attached then went to Fairfax Court House, and from there into winter quarters at Centerville. In the spring they went to Romney, then returned to Winchester, from there falling back towards Staunton. The battle of Kernstown was his next engagement, then in all the fights under Jackson until that general was killed at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg R.S. DUDLEY lost his left arm, July 3, 1863, and was made prisoner. He was sent to Davis Island, New York, and lay for four months under the care of the Christian Commission, after which he came home. He is now working on a salary as engineer for the Norfolk & Western Railroad. In 1871 Mary S. ARTHUR became the wife of R.S. DUDLEY. She was born in Botetourt county, Virginia, in 1844, a daughter of John A. and Elizabeth (GOOD) ARTHUR, and came with her parents to Pulaski county in 1867. R. S.
