The entire regiment went at once into the Confederate service, mustering in at Newbern, Pulaski County. The regiment went to Camp Jackson, Wytheville, then to Black Water, below Lynchburg, where the Confederates were defeated in a severe engagement, and marched to Dalton, Georgia, only to sustain another defeat and loss of men. Their next halting place was Atlanta, Georgia, where for several weeks they were constantly in skirmishes, and then they went to Bridgeport and to Nashville, in Tennessee, fighting all the way, and about all the time. After engagement at Morrisburg, Tennessee, the regiment went into North Carolina, where Mr. Faris was shot, and went into hospital, thence returning home. He resumed the life of a farmer and still continues in it, trusting Virginia's soil may never again be given up to the ravages of war. His address is Allisonia, Pulaski county, Virginia.
