Biography of George Farmer - Pulaski Co. VA Source: The Index to Pulaski County History in Hardesty's 1884 GEORGE FARMER - has passed nearly eighty years of life in Pulaski county, where he was born in 1807, was reared on a farm, was married in 1829, and has always followed farming for a livelihood.. He was a son of Thompson and Patsy (GODBY) FARMER, who were among the first settlers on this then Western Frontier of Virginia. In the early days of their residence here the Indians were all about them, their rudely constructed forts were their only safe homes, and in them the women would protect themselves, while the men went forth armed to the tilling of the soil. The wife of George Farmer was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, in 1811, and her parents were Benjamin and Susy (HUGHS) MCDONNELL. The children of Mr. & Mrs. FARMER were ten: Harriet F., born in 1831; Clementine, 1833; Martha J., 1836; Mary E., 1838; Jemima, 1840; Parthenia, 1842; Thomas, 1844; James, 1848; Rhoda, 1849; George C. 1852. One son enlisted in the Fifty-Fourth Virginia Infantry, served all through the war in the campaign of the West, was once taken prisoner, but returned home at the close of the war unharmed, and is now living in this county, about four miles from the place where he was born.
