Biography of Haven B. Howe - Pulaski Co. VA HAVEN B. HOWE-is descended from one of the first and most distinguished families of the settlers of Pulaski county. His father's father, who was a soldier of the Continental army and a participant in the battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, after the close of that war made his home in what is now Pulaski county, and for many years held the offices of presiding justice and high sheriff with honor to himself and profit to the people. John D. HOWE, father of Haven B., was born in this county in 1801, and is still enjoying a serene old age here, living about thirteen miles from his son's residence. he also, served Pulaski county a number of years as justice and sheriff. He married Sarah B. SHEPHERD, and their son, subject of this sketch, was born in this county June 2, 1847. In Pulaski county, April 16, 1873, Haven B. Howe wedded Kate M. CLOYD, who was born in this county, in July, 1852. She is the daughter of David M. and Elizabeth M. (McGAVOCK) CLOYD. The children of Mr. and Mrs. HOWE are two daughters and one son: Emma, born in 1874; David C., 1876; Lacy G., 1879. During the war between the States, Mr. HOWE was a member of Company F, Fourteenth Virginia Cavalry, enlisting in Pulaski county in 1864 at the age of seventeen, and serving in the valley of Virginia till the close of the war, taking part in the battles of Milford, Dinwiddie Court House and Five Forks. He had one brother who was made prisoner at Spottsylvania Court House, and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he died. Haven B. HOWE is a farmer of Newbern. district, and has been four years county supervisor, from July 1, 1879, to July 1, 1883. Dublin, Pulaski county, Virginia, is his postoffice address.
