Biography of Andrew L. Ingles - Pulaski Co. VA ANDREW L. INGLES-son of Thomas and Catharine C. (McCLENAHAN) INGLES, was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, February 16. 1846. He entered the Virginia Cavalry, Twenty-Fifth Regiment, in March, 1863, and was sent to Fisherville, then Lynchburg, where they had a skirmish with the enemy, then to Salem, and down the Shenandoah valley, and into Maryland by way of Shepherdstown. He took part in the raid on Frederick City, and the retreat, destroying bridges, tearing up railroad track, etc., capturing horses and mules, and then marched on Washington City. At the time of Lee's surrender he was engaged in Montgomery county in beating back Stoneman's men and so continued till the war ended. In Montgomery county, November 18, 1874, the marriage vows were recorded of Andrew L. INGLES and Julia HARVEY, and the children born to them are five: Thomas, August 1, 1875; William, November 27, 1877 ; Mary D., August 16, 1879 ; Elrica H., May 17, 1881 ; Andrew, July 22, 1883. Nathaniel B. and Elrica (ROER) HARVEY were the parents of Julia, wife of Mr. INGLES, and she was born in Montgomery county March 3, 1851. Mary Ingles, great-grandmother of Andrew L., was captured by the Indians at about the time of the French and Indian war, and at the age of seventy years taken to one of their villages at the mouth of Kanawha river, She was kept prisoner eight months, and then made, her escape, traveling back to civilization with a German woman, also escaping. They had for a time an old horse, on which they rode alternately, and when they had lost that by accident they journeyed on foot. They subsisted on the wild grapes that they could find, on corn and on roots, and when Mrs. Ingles came within sight of her battle she was so much reduced by starvation and exposure that she could go no further, and was found prostrate on the ground. She lived eighteen years after this adventure. The occupation of Andrew L. INGLES is farming, and his address is New River, Pulaski county, Virginia.
