Biography of Thomas Jones - Pulaski Co. VA THOMAS JONES-is a native of England, born in Bristol in 1840, a son of David and Sarah (HANCOCK) JONES. In the kingdom of Wales, in 1861, he married Mary A. JAMES, born in Wales January 16, 1841, John and Sarah (THOMAS) JAMES her parents. The children of Mr. and Mrs. JONES were born: Sarah, January 23, 1862; Mary A., December 30, 1863; Elizabeth, December 1, 1865; Thomas J., September 21, 1867; David, February 11, 1869; Archibald, May 1, 1872; son not named, April 3 1874, deceased; Alvin A., July 15, 1875, deceased; Edward J., December 21, 1877; Arnold M., November 4, 1879, deceased. Thomas JONES located in Pulaski county in 1879, and he has in his charge the smelting works at Martins Station. He is a first-class smelter, and has worked in England, Belgium, Prussia, Styria and Russia, becoming thoroughly familiarized with all the improved processes, Bessemer and others. The works at Martins were commenced on the 5th of November, 1879, and completed in eighty-five working days. The capacity of the works is 5,000 pounds every twenty-four hours; the company has 190 acres in the tract of land where they have built, ten acres covered with buildings, and they employ twenty-five teams, fifty men in the furnace and 125 in the mines. They have 240 acres in the land where they are mining, and their ore is inexhaustible in quantity and of the best quality. All work done at Martins is under the direct supervision of Mr. JONES.
