Biography of James P. Kelley - Pulaski Co. VA JAMES P. KELLEY-son of Joseph and Ruth (MURRAY) KELLEY, was born in Wythe county, Virginia, on Independence Day, 1839 and was about four years old when his parents made their home in Pulaski county. In this county he enlisted for service in the war between the South and the North, and held second lieutenant's commission in Company C, Fourth Virginia Infantry. He served through the entire struggle, was twice wounded, and was made a prisoner at Spottsylvania C.H., May 12, 1864, and taken to Fort Delaware, thence to Morris Island, South Carolina, from there to Fort Pulaski, on the Savanna river, and from there back to Fort Delaware, where he was released after the close of the war. He took part in the battles of Manassas, Bull Run the seven days fight with MCCLELLAN, Cedar Mountain, Gettysburg, assisted in the capture of MILLROY'S forces at Winchester, the stampede of Banks in the Shenandoah valley, the first and second battles of Chancellorsville, the battles of the Wilderness and at Fredericksburg. Three of his brothers laid their lives on the altar of their country. Edwin W. was a member of the Fourth Infantry with him, and died in hospital at Richmond of congestion of the brain; Joseph W. was in the Thirty-seventh Virginia Infantry, and was killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland; John T. was a member of the Fifty-fourth Virginia Infantry, and died of typhoid fever in Montgomery White Sulfur hospital. Returning to his home, James P. KELLEY engaged in farming, stock-raising and he married, February 6, 1867, Mary E. ANDERSON. Their Children are: Arthur Ogden, born February 6, 1868; Alice. February 13, 1870; James Sydney, July 20, 1872; Schuyler, November 12, 1874; Joseph, Novewmber10, 1876; Ruth P., February 27, 1878; Maggie MILLER, August 7, 1880. The wife of Mr. KELLEY was born in Roanoke County, Virginia, November 16, 1845, daughter of James C. and Susan C. (TRUCKS) ANDERSON, who made their home in Pulaski county in 1855. James P.
