Biography of Robert Kirkwood - Pulaski Co. VA ROBERT KIRKWOOD-owns and cultivates one of the best farms in Pulaski county, to which is attached the historic interest of having been the first place settled by white inhabitants west of New river, when an unbroken wilderness stretched between here and Richmond. Charles S. and Lucy Ann (HARVEY) KIRKWOOD were the parents of the subject of this sketch. They were natives of Roanoke county, Virginia, and he was born in that county, March 16, 1837, coming to Pulaski county in 1863. At Pepper's Ferry, this county, December 15, 1863, he married Laura L. PEPPER, born at Pepper's Ferry, May 30, 1841. Jesse and Erskins PEPPER were her parents. They were born in this county, and her paternal grandfather, for whom Pepper's Ferry is named came to this (then Montgomery) county about 1764. He built a small mill near his house immediately after coming here, to which people came from great distances to have their corn ground. During the war between the States, Robert KIRKWOOD had two brothers in the Confederate army, one in infantry, the other in cavalry services.
