Biography of Alvin M. Smith - Pulaski Co. VA ALVIN M. SMITH-- follows the trade of a carpenter in Pulaski county, where he made his home in 1880, his parents, Alexander B. and Ellen (SMITH) SMITH, accompanying him in his settlement here. He was born October 14, 1854, in Monroe county, (now) West Virginia, and was raised as a farmer boy in Montgomery County, Virginian, receiving no regular schooling until he was nineteen years of age. He then attended for two sessions the Virginia Mechanical and Agricultural College at Blacksburg. In Montgomery county, September 12, 1877, Alvin M. SMITH and Luvenia E. E. LINKOUS were united in marriage, and of their union three children were born: Ballard A., August 1, 1878; Anna M. July 24, 1880; Gillia G., August 12,1888. The birth of Luvenia E. LINKOUS was in Montgomery county, the date April 25, 1855, and J. Ballard and Jane (KEISTER) LINKOUS her parents. Alexander B. SMITH, father of Alvin M., was a soldier of the Confederacy, two years in active service, volunteering in Giles County in 1861, and for the remainder of the war detailed to make saltpetre. After the war he engaged at labor in an iron furnace for a time, and then took up farming. William SMITH, brother of Alexander B., was shot by mistake by one of his comrades, while the Confederate troops to which he was attached were crossing the mountains at Sweet Springs. He was mounted on horseback, and feel, bleeding in the breast, dying of his would. It had always been his request to be buried where he fell, and his wish was complied with. Alvin M.
