Will of James Calfee, 1865

Written in Prison Camp- Elmira, NY

My will is as follows. The land on which my father 
and mother now lives, I wish for them to hold this 
lifetime to do as they see fit with till their deaths.
The land on which my wife now lives is still to be 
held by her as long as she lives. After her death I 
wish all the named lands to be equally divided between 
my three children, Franklin R. Calfee, William C. 
Calfee, and Marinda J. Calfee.  My stocks and all 
my household property I wish to be held by my 
wife till her death.
My saddle I give to Franklin R. Calfee to be his 
own property. The land 
which I sold to Joseph Quisenberry, after my 
debts are paid out of it, I 
wish for the remainder to be paid for the schooling 
of my three children, so far as it may advance them.
This will I wish to be strictly complied with as I think 
it to be best,

Virginia, At a court held for the County of Pulaski 
on Thursday, the 7th day of September 1865.
The last will and testament of James Calfee 
deceased, was this day 
presented in Court proven by the oaths of Isaac 
Tipton, one of the subscribing witnesses thereto, 
and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court 
that William B. Williams the other subscribing 
witness thereto, is now dead his hand writing 
was duly proven and the said will ordered to be recorded.
