Born in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Cora Compton Yates. He was a member of Fairlawn Untied Methodist Church, a veteran of both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy, was a retired power house foreman at Hercules with 20 years of service and also a retired employee of Appalachian Power Co. with 20 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ila N. Yates; two sons, Steven Yates of Wytheville and David Yates of Radford; two daughters, Lori A. Yates and Julie Jordan, both of Fairlawn; two brothers, Harold Yates of Christiansburg and Reed Yates of Stuart; and five grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday in Fairlawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Gentle Shepherd Hospice, P.O. Box 3754, Radford, VA 24143. Mullins Funeral Home of Radford is in charge of arrangements.
