Atkins Cemetery Location: On Route #3 at Flint Hill, Virginia, in the Baptist Church yard. Rappahannock Co., Virginia DATE: 1864. The oldest date on grave. OWNERS: Baptist Church – Community. DESCRIPTION: A Public burying ground, it is located in the church-yard of the Baptist Church at Flint Hill, Virginia; it is well cared for. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A very distressing circumstance occurred here during the War Between the States, when one of Mosby’s command was executed by hanging, by the Federal forces. In one corner of the cemetery is the tomb of Abner G. Willis, a member of Company C, 43rd Virginia Battalion, Mosby’s command, hung in retaliation as may be seen by the inscription. How cruel and inhuman was may become. The following inscription was copies from the tombstone: Abner G. Willis Killed Oct. 14, 1864 Co. C. 43 Va. Battalion Mosby’s Command Hung in Retaliation.
