(Woodstock, Va.) 1865-1974: August 12, 1869 At the residence of his father, in Rappahannock county, Va., on the 30th of May, Captain William D. Moffett, in the 29th year of his age. Captain M. entered the Confederate service in the beginning of the war, and passed through that terrible struggle, unharmed. As a soldier and officer, he shrunk from no duty but properly met every obligation; and by his noble bearing and amiable disposition won the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. At the close of the war, he returned to his home, and devoted himself to the study of the law. It is probable, his intense application to study sowed the seeds of disease in his constitution which hastened him to his grave. He had entered upon the practice of his profession with cheering prospects for a brilliant future. He leaves an amiable and affectionate wife to whom he had been married only a few months, and a father whose honor and happiness he carefully studied, together with a numerous circle of relatives and friends, to mourn his early death. But they sorrow not as those who have no hope. He was a devoted christian, a loved member of the Mt. Salem Baptist Church and exemplified the virtues which elevate and adorn the character of man. He has finished his work on earth, and gone to receive his reward in Heaven.
