He had been diagnosed with lung cancer the week before. Spending most of his career at the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Mr. Haynie is respected for hard-hitting, liberal-leaning cartoons. He retired in 1995 after 35 years with the Courier Journal and continued to submit cartoons to the newspaper. At one time, his drawings appeared in more than 50 papers across the country; reprints have also appeared in Time, Newsweek and other periodicals. Mr. Haynie's work is in various presidential library collections, including those of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter. A member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, his professional journalism accolades include the Headliner Award, the Freedom Foundation Medal and the Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Award. Born February 6, 1927, in Reedville, Mr. Haynie's family operated Reedville Oil and Guano, a predecessor to Zapata-Haynie and Omega Protein. He graduated from Reedville High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1944-46. He earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the College of William & Mary in 1950, where his cartoons appeared in The Flat Hat. He began his career at the Richmond Times-Dispatch and left during the Korean War to again serve in the Coast Guard, later returning to the paper. He also worked at the Greensboro Daily News and the Atlanta Journal before joining the Courier-Journal in 1958. In 1953, he married Lois Cooper, whose name often was hidden in his sketches; they later divorced. Mr. Haynie is survived by his son, Hugh Smith Haynie III. Margaret E. Nelms BALTIMORE-Margaret E. Nelms, 73, died Tuesday, November 23, 1999, in Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore. She was born May 20, 1926, in Lancaster, the fourth child of Augustus and Lolis Bea Nelms of Lancaster. She received her education from Lancaster Elementary School and A.T. Wright High School. She worked for a family in their home for many years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Heathsville. She was predeceased by a sister, Bell Nelms Pinn, and a brother, Augustus "Bubbie" Nelms. She is survived by a sister, Marva N. Carter of New Jersey; two brothers, Ryland Nelms of Baltimore and Lucious Nelms of Heathsville; a sister-in-law, Marie Nelms of Heathsville, and many niecies, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral service was held Saturday, November 27, at First Baptist Church in Heathsville with the Rev. John S. Fontaine officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Betty Lou Setters DALLASTOWN, PA.-Betty Lou Setters, 67, formerly of Weems, died Tuesday, November 30, 1999, in the Manor Care Health Services facility. She was born to Thomas and Edna Jones Russell Sr. on February 1, 1932, in Weems. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Mae Setters; a brother, Thomas Russell Jr. of Pasadena, Md., and a sister, Jackie Gaines of Lively. She is survived by a son, David E. Setters of Etters, Pa.; two daughters, Deborah Ann Diehl of Dover, Pa., and Mary E. Blocher of Dillsburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Following cremation, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Etzweiler Funeral Home in York, Pa., is in charge of arrangements. She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Fleet; a son, William G. "Bill" and wife Deborah B. Fleet; a sister, Dot Lewis, and a grandson, Christopher W. Fleet. Ernest Howard Lewis HEATHSVILLE-Ernest Howard Lewis, 68, died December 1, 1999. He was born June 8, 1931 to Dorothy Louise Wiggins and Luther Lewis of Horsehead. Mr. Lewis was baptized at an early age at First Baptist Church in Heathsville and received his education in Northumberland County public schools. He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force in 1952. Prior to receiving an honorable discharge in 1961, he traveled to Moracco, Greenland, Newfoundland, and several U.S. cities. After his assignment at McChord Air Force Base in Washington, he chose to remain in the Tacoma area, employed as a bus operator for Pierce Transit. For a time he also operated a service station owned in partnership with a friend. He received several safe driver awards and recognition as a valuable employee. He is survived by his wife, Pam Lewis of Tacoma, Wa.; three children, Sarah Lewis of Fredericksburg, and David and Amber Lewis of Tacoma; a grandson, Tevin Johnson of Fredericksburg; his mother, Dorothy Louise Lewis of Horsehead; a brother, Carlton Lewis of Woodford; five nieces, Sibyl Lewis of Greensboro, N.C., Angelynn Satterwhite of Woodbridge and Heather, Megan and Rachel Thompson of Washington state; two nephews, Avery Lewis of Greensboro and Lachlann Thompson of Washington state; an uncle, Stanley Wiggins of Heathsville; two aunts, Brent Wiggins of Heathsville and Lucille Wiggins of Portsmouth; his mother-in-law, Shirley Thompson of Washington state; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Lewis of Woodford and Becca Thompson of California; a brother-in-law, Drew Thompson of Washington state; a great-niece, Olivia Satterwhite of Woodbridge, and many cousins, other relatives and friends. Interment will be in the church cemetery. George William Sanford OLDHAMS-George William Sanford, 83, died Thursday, December 2, 1999 at his home in Oldhams. Mr. Sanford was a farmer, carpenter and trucker of freight to Baltimore. He worked with his friend, Charles B. English, Sheriff of Westmoreland County, during the 1960's and 1970's. Mr. Sanford was a longtime treasurer of the Ebenezer Cemetery Fund and active in looking after the cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Victoria Wright Sanford. He is survived by three sons, G. W. "Billy" Sanford Jr., Robert G. "Bobby" Sanford and Benjamin W. "Benny" Sanford; a brother, Robert E. Sanford; four grandchildren, Robert G. Sanford Jr., Margaret Sanford Beahm, Richard T. Sanford and George W. Sanford III, and nine great-grandchildren. Grace Weber Schwall WHITE STONE-Grace Weber Schwall, 85, of White Stone, widow of Frank G. Schwall, died December 6, 1999. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Frank G. Schwall Jr. and his wife, Bette Schwall, of Dallas, Tx.; two grandsons, Frank G. Schwall III and his wife, Cynthia M. Schwall, and Dr. Bradman Weber Schwall and his wife, Lynn H. Schwall, all of Dallas; three great-grandsons, Frank G. Schwall IV, Samuel Allen Schwall and Adam Conrad Schwall, all of Dallas, and two sisters, Evelyn W. Murray and Edna W. Guinevere Derrick White HEATHSVILLE-Guinevere Derrick White, 85, an active volunteer for many years in Northumberland County, died November 15, 1999, in Washington, D.C. She was born in Spokane, Wa., to Eliza and Richard Derrick on March 20, 1914. After she completed high school, the whole family, including her twin sister, Gwendolyn, relocated to Washington, D.C., for both girls to attend Howard University, where she received bachelors and masters degrees in mathematics. She became a teacher in the District of Columbia public school system soon after graduation. She married Earle Elliott White from Washington, D.C., in June of 1950. They lived and worked most of their lives in the D.C. area and later in Heathsville. They had two sons, Gary Elliott White and Jeffrey Derrick White. She taught mathematics at Banneker Junior High School from 1943 to 1950. She then taught for 23 years at Atkins, Cardozo and Eastern High Schools in D.C. After retiring from the D.C. school system, she taught for 18 years at D.C. Teachers College, Washington Technical Institute, Trinity College and Strayer College. She was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She served as president of the Beta Chapter from 1976 to 1978. In retirement, Mr. and Mrs. White had a second residence in Heathsville, which soon became their home. She continued her involvement in the community through education and volunteer service. She was a volunteer tutor and trainer for Literacy Volunteers of America, in the Adult Basic Education Program of Northumberland County. She was a leader in bringing the new public library to the county and a dedicated volunteer in efforts to restore and maintain the Holley Graded School, a historic school house established in 1869 to teach black children in Lottsburg. She and her husband were active at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Heathsville where she taught in the Sunday School, chaired the Altar Guild, led Bible study at the Tuesday morning prayer breakfast and served with the Episcopal Church Women. Mrs. White will be remembered as a kind and loving person who dedicated her life to teaching. In all that she did and shared with her family, friends and associates, she was unassuming, caring and dedicated to making a difference. She is survived by her husband, Earle; two sons, Gary White and Jeffrey White, MD, and their wives, Gretchen and Pearl; two grandchildren, Chelsea and Ian; a nephew, Richard Holland, and his wife and daughter, Phyllis and Ashley; a stepson, Earle L. White, and his wife, Madeline, and their sons, Earle G. and Wendell, and many relatives, friends and former students. Funeral services were held at Calvary Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C., on November 23, with interment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Md. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at noon on January 15, with a repast to follow at 1 p.m. at the Holley Graded School in Lottsburg. Harry Goodwin Muse WASHINGTON'S BIRTHPLACE-Harry Goodwin Muse, 79, of Washington's Birthplace, died December 3, 1999, at Mary Washington Health Care Center in Colonial Beach after an 11-year illness. He was born and lived on the farm of his ancestors dating from 1668 and carried on the farming tradition from 1939 to 1985, when he retired. He had served with distinction on the ASCS Board for 20 years and received several awards. In 1984, he and his wife of 39 years, Florence Jenkins Muse, were presented the Outstanding Farm Family Award by the Westmoreland County Farm Bureau. In 1988, the Department of Agriculture presented Mr. Muse with an award which reads in part, "Your farm has been recognized as having been in the same family since the birth of the U.S. Constitution." He was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he served 39 years as a deacon and held numerous offices in the church and Sunday School. He is survived by his wife, Florence; his sister-in-law, Neva Muse of Leedstown; his nephew, Larry Muse and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Washington's Birthplace; his niece, Janice Muse Frye and husband, Joseph, and three children, Daniel, John and Meredyth of Fredericksburg; a large family by marriage; two first cousins, Wavie Muse Harvey and James Muse Hamblin and their families, and two devoted friends, Lawrence W. Latane Jr. and his family of Washington's Birthplace, and George D. Church and his family of Fredericksburg and Richmond. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 5, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Jesse Lee "Pete" Kent HAMPTON-Jesse Lee "Pete" Kent, 78, died Tuesday, November 30, 1999, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Northumberland, he had been a resident of Hampton since 1952. Mr. Kent was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. He retired from NASA in 1976. He is survived by a son, Don Kent, and his wife, Nancy, of Newport News; a stepson, Carl G. Thomas Jr., and his wife, Sue, of Greer, S.C., and three grandchildren, Ashley L. Kent of Newport News, Carl G. Thomas III of San Diego, Ca., and Greyson C. Thomas of Greer. Mrs. Mothershead was the widow of Richard Ivan Mothershead and a member of Totuskey Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Lloyd Davis; a sister, Ida Foulk, and a son-in-law, Thomas O. Fogg Sr. She is survived by a son, Carington R. Norman William Prescott WARSAW-Norman William Prescott, 68, of Warsaw died Saturday, December 4, 1999. He was a member of Totuskey Baptist Church in Haynesville and was a retired foreman for Contract Enterprise Inc. He is survived by his wife, Elvie V. Prescott; a daughter, LaDonna Sue Harrison and her husband, Kevin, of Village; a son, Norman W. Patricia Payler Madison IRVINGTON-Patricia Payler Madison, 68, died November 30, 1999 at Mizpah Health Care Center in Locust Hill. She had been fighting a malignant brain tumor since last June at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Annandale and at the home she shared with her husband, James R. Madison, in Falls Church. The couple also shared a home in Irvington, where they had lived a majority of the time for some 13 years until her illness. They had been married nearly 29 years. Mr. Madison, retired, will continue to live in Irvington. Patricia, a 35-year federal employee in Washington, D.C., retired after some 15 years as Director of Personnel for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service. After her retirement, she worked part-time assisting in managing the Annandale office of Dr. Heinz H.E. Scheidemandel. Mrs. Madison was born on November 9, 1931, in Cincinnati, Oh. She lived there with her parents, Louis W. and Esther L. Miller Payler, her sister, Louise, and brother, William, all deceased. She was educated in Cincinnati and at other schools in Ohio. She was awarded a Master's Degree in social psychology by Columbia University and a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education by George Washington University. Mrs. Madison received several awards during her career, including USDA's Superior Service Award. She was an avid patron of the arts, especially stage productions, classical music and fine art. She loved animals, particularly water birds, sea mammals and horses. She was a horsewoman during her early years and participated in riding events. Patricia and her husband raised one son, Randall E. Madison, born in a previous marriage of James'. He is an occupational therapist in Lantona, Fl. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 10, in Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Thomas G. George LANCASTER-Thomas G. George Jr., 58, of Lancaster died December 5, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Lou-ise Potter George; a daughter, Can-dace G. Hall of Weems, and a sis-ter, Theresa Whittaker of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas G. George Sr. and Margaret Schools George, and two sisters, Betty Lou Abbott and Sadie Mae McCarty. Orion Lindell Cruise CHESTER-Orion Lindell Cruise, 92, formerly of Danville and Reedville, died November 29, 1999, in Chester. Mr. Cruise was born in Patrick County in 1907, the son of James Rangely and Ida Light Cruise. He served in the U.S. Army from 1927 to 1930, then was employed by Trailways Bus Company until his retirement in 1972. He and his late wife, Ann Parks Cruise, retired to Reedville where they lived until her death in 1993. Mr. Cruise was active in the Masonic Order in Danville and Reedville. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Danville and Bethany United Methodist Church, Reedville. He is survived by a brother, Aaron V. Cruise of Winnsboro, Tx.; a son, Lindell P. Cruise, and his wife, Constance, of Richmond; two grandsons, David L. Cruise and William R. Cruise, and their families, including three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 2, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Reedville with Rev. Ronald R. Jones officiating. Louise Lackey Headley HEATHSVILLE-Louise Lackey Headley, 84, of Heathsville died Thursday, December 2, 1999. She was the widow of Donald Neale Headley, a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Wicomico Church and the Northumberland Historical Society. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia H. and William Burgess and Roberta H. and Steve Jones; and five grandchildren, Ashley and Dare Burgess and Todd, Meghan and Kyle Jones. Mr. Kelley was born June 20, 1922, in Ida May, W.V. to William and Polly Kelley. He served in World War II and afterward moved to Long Island, N.Y., where he was employed by the Sal Picone Construction Company until he retired. On Long Island, he served as a deacon and member of the senior choir in the Springfield Community Church. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Wicomico Church in 1977, which they chose for its serenity and as a good place to garden. He joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Reedville where he sang with the senior choir, the sanctuary choir and the Fairfield's Men's Chorus. He delivered the mid-day fellowship meals on Tuesdays until his health began to fail. Mr. Kelley also participated in many community and civic organizations including the Northumberland County Planning Commission, the Chamber of Commerce, the Assessment Board and the Democratic Committee. He is survived by his wife, Alma; a daughter, Geneva Holiday of Bronx, N.Y.; four sisters, Alice Cottrell, Pansy Phillips, Eva Pauncy and Frances Pippin of Detroit, Mi.; two brothers-in-law, John Pippin of Detroit and Louis Coleman of Long Island; three sisters-in-law, Ella Kelley of Wicomico Church, Clinice Camper of Washington, D.C. and Marian Coleman of Jamaica, N.Y., and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. David Lewis WHITE STONE-David Lewis, 81, of White Stone, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and a World War II veteran, died Monday, December 13, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Violet M. Lewis; four children, David J. Lewis of Las Vegas, Nv., Mary Ellen Lewis and Gordon Lewis, both of Provo, Ut., and Kathryn Ann Smith of Burke, and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, December 16, at the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Tom Caye officiating. Interment will take place at 10 a.m., Monday, December 20, in Arlington National Cemetery. William James Mickles RICHMOND-William James Mickles, 47, died Sunday, December 5, 1999, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Mr. Mickles was born January 3, 1952, in Conroe, Tx., to Marion and Margaret Mickles. He and his siblings were raised in White Stone. He was educated in Lancaster County public schools and received a bachelors degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in White Stone until he moved to Richmond in 1970. He is survived by two sisters, Dolly James of Newport News and Darlene Mickles of Richmond; two brothers, Freddie Mickles of Baltimore and Marion Mickles Jr. of Vancouver, Wa.; a devoted friend, John Williams of Prospect, and many nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral service was held Saturday, December 11, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Ferrell Brown officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Sue Lane Bielke REEDVILLE-Sue Lane Bielke, 78, of Reedville, formerly of Fork Union, widow of Frank A. Bielke, died Saturday, December 11, 1999. She was predeceased by her son, Marc C. Bielke. She is survived by three children, Martha "Tink" Thompson and Ruth Lane Hasenfang of Richmond, and Van Bielke Rafaly of Fluvanna; eight grandchildren; her sister, Doris Wheeler; three brothers, Walter Lane and Francis Lane of Roanoke, and Mark Lane of West Palm Beach, and many nieces and nephews. Setzler, 65, of Heathsville, died December 14, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Mary Setzler; four daughters, Lesley Setzler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sabrina Wolfe of N.Y., Laura Henniger and Karen Oswalt, both of Ashburn; two sons, Frank Setzler of Chandler, Az., and Brian Wolfe of Ashburn; 11 grandchildren, and a brother, Paul Setzler of Toronto, Canada. Collier LANCASTER-Jack W. Collier, 69, of Laurel Point in Lancaster died Saturday, December 11, 1999. Mr. Collier was a native of Arlington, and a graduate of George Washington University. He had a 30-year career as a computer systems analyst with the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. Following retirement from civil service, he and his wife moved to Kilmarnock. He was owner of Bluff Point Satellite Electronics until his death. He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Collier; a brother, William L. Collier of Shadyside, Md.; two nieces, and two nephews. A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, December 16, at the Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Lillian Mozingo Lewis FARNHAM-Lillian Mozingo Lewis, 99, of Farnham died Sunday, December 12, 1999. She was the widow of Andrew Columbus Lewis, a member of Totuskey Baptist Church in Haynesville and a retired seamstress. She is survived by three daughters, Maxine Lewis Short, Evelyn Lewis Mahan and Gladys Marie Bryant, all of Farnham; five grandchildren; one foster great-grandson; eight great-grandchildren, and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Margaret Campbell Love IRVINGTON-Margaret Campbell Love, 98, died at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury in Irvington on Saturday, November 20, 1999. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on October 12, 1901, and lived in New York, Tuscon, Az. and Vineyard Haven, Ma., before moving to Virginia in 1989. She was a benefactor to hundreds of charitable organizations, and a lifelong member and supporter of the Episcopal Church. She was predeceased by her parents, John H. Love and Bertha Smith Love, and her brothers, John H. Love III and Robert M. Love. She is survived by three nieces, Hannah Love Robinson, of Candor, N.Y., and Margaret Campbell "Marky" Love II and Alice H. Love, both of Middleburg. In the spirit of giving to others all that she could, Miss Love arranged to have her remains donated to science. Memorial services in Irvington and Vineyard Haven will be arranged at a future date. Marjorie Dameron Kozlowski MONTROSS-Marjorie Dameron Kozlowski, 94, of Montross, died Saturday, December 11, 1999. Mrs. Kozlowski was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a member of Carmel United Methodist Church, and the widow of Thaddeus Kozlowski. She is survived by a stepson, Robert Kozlowski of Hastings, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Irene Doyle of South Boston, Ma.; a sister, Ada Ptomey of Kinsale; a sister-in-law, Ethel M. Nina Elizabeth Bury MOLLUSK-Nina Elizabeth Bury, 90, of Mollusk died Thursday, December 9, 1999. She was the widow of George T. Bury, a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lively, and a volunteer at Rappahannock General Hospital for over 20 years. She is survived by a niece, Sally M. Strother of Orlean; a nephew, Howard D. Southerland Jr. of Barclay, Md., and a number of other nieces and nephews. Randolph Marchal Mason RICHMOND-Randolph Marchal Mason, 76, of Richmond died December 12, 1999. Mr. Mason was retired from the former A. H. Robbins Co. He was a World War II veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart during service in the United States Marine Corps on the Pacific island of Peleliu. He is survived by his wife, Ann Towers Mason; two children, Susan M. Sanders and her husband, Charles, of Irvington, and R. Marshall Mason and his wife, Susan, of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Jeffery O. Smith of Fredericksburg; a cousin, Gordon R. Mason, son of the late Randolph T. Mason of North, and six grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 18, at Trinity Cemetery, Route 14, at Foster in Mathews County.
