He was born on Indiantown Farm in Weems and received his bachelor's degree at the University of Richmond and his master's in education at the University of Virginia. Most of his career was spent in the Staunton school system, where he was principal of Robert E. Lee High School for 29 years. He retired to Corrotoman Point in 1967. Mr. Smither was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor McCoy Smither, and four brothers. He is survived by a sister, Emma S. Haislip of Kilmarnock, and four neices and nephews, Collin M. Smither of Weems, Thomas N. Smither of Kilmarnock, Clara C. Christopher of Williamsburg and Bettie Lee Gaskins of Urbanna. Graveside services in Historic Christ Church Cemetery, Irvington, will be held on Thursday, September 14, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. top* Roger P. Baird Jr. RICHMOND-Roger P. Baird Jr., 80, of Richmond died Monday, September 4, 2000. Mr. Baird served as a test pilot in the Army Air Corps for many types of aircraft, including the B-29, during World War II. He was a sales engineer with Texaco Inc. for 39 years. He was a member and deacon of River Road Church, Baptist, and was a member of Willow Oaks Country Club and the Virginia Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Sara Boone Baird; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne Baird and Dr. Robert J. Newman; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Roger Pryor Baird III and Dr. Chris DeVincentis Baird; a sister, Lucy Wynn Baird; a brother, William Thomas Baird, and two grandchildren, Lesley Pryor and Sara Virginia Newman. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 7, at River Road Church, Baptist. Interment was in Westhampton Memorial Park. Mr. Crandall was born in Foxwells to John L. and Susie M. Crandall on November 9, 1924. He began his career as a crew member of a Standard Products fish steamer and later became a mate. He retired from Ampro Fisheries as net foreman after over 50 years in the menhaden industry. He was a lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Foxwells. He was predeceased by a sister, Irene Barnett, and two brothers, Ivan and Raymond Crandall. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorell George Crandall; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria C. and Robert B. Conley of Lancaster and Debbie C. and Gerald L. Abbott of Kilmarnock; a son and daughter-in-law, T. Leroy and Marianette H. Crandall of White Stone; five grandchildren, Amy C. Passagaluppi and her husband, Randy, of Farnham, Martha C. Smith and her husband, Bill, of Kilmarnock, Tyler L. Crandall of White Stone, and Jessia L. and Alex W. He was born to Margaret Rowe and George Curtis Oliver in Gloucester on November 8, 1920. Mr. Oliver was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired plumbing contractor. Mr. Robinson was born December 9, 1920, in Ottoman, the son of Susie S. and Hiland J. Robinson. He was baptized at Hartswell Baptist Church where he attended Sunday school and served on the trustee board. He later joined Queen Esther Baptist Church in Lancaster where he served on the trustee board and sang in the men's chorus. He married Inetta V. Coleman on May 8, 1942. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Inetta Robinson; three sons, James Jr., Linwood and Carol Robinson; four daughters, Carlin Overbey, Susie Walker, Shirley Davis and Connie Wood; his mother, Susie S. Robinson of Baltimore; a sister, Inetta Carter of Baltimore; five brothers, Earl, Harry and George Robinson of Lancaster, Leroy Robinson of Baltimore and Frank Robinson of Alexandria; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law, Clarence Davis, William Walker and Gerry Wood; a daughter-in-law, Diana Robinson; a brother-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; many other relatives and two special friends, Andrew "Skinny" Jackson and the Rev. Mr. Thomas was born January 4, 1908, the son of Howard Opie Thomas and Mary Ellen Forrester Thomas. He was the widower of Annie Norwood Thomas. He had been in the armed forces and was a retired commercial truck driver. He is survived by two brothers, Everett Thomas of Kilmarnock and Allen Thomas of Tarpon Spring, Fl., and two sisters, Pauline T. McAllister of Coles Point and Elsie T. Jones of Altamont Spring, Fl. He was born February 4, 1954, in Nuttsville, the youngest child of Leah Kelly Towles and the late Howard Towles. He attended the new Mollusk School in Lancaster County and was baptized at Beulah Baptist Church. He worked most of his life in the seafood industry. Interment was in the church cemetery. top* Theda Jane Childs Weaver IRVINGTON-Theda Jane Childs Weaver, 87, of Irvington died Monday, September 11, 2000. A native of Illinois, she was the youngest child of Florence Baker Childs and Dr. Theron Brown Childs of Glencoe, Il. She graduated from New Trier High School and Northwestern University, where she was Phi Beta Kappa, and later earned a master's degree in English literature. She taught at the high school level and at Thornton Community College, which is now South Suburban College, in South Holland, Il. In 1975, she retired from her teaching career and joined her sister at their new home, "No-Che-Mo," on Fleets Bay Road in White Stone. On May 12, 1979, she married Martin Weaver of Remington and they made their home in Weems. Mrs. Weaver was active in the community. She was past president of the Rappahannock Art League and, as an amateur painter, exhibited at an art league show. She is preceded in death by her sister, Adelaide Childs, and brother, Dr. Theron Baker Childs. She is survived by her husband; three stepdaughters, Sandra Weaver McLeskey of Arlington, Margaret Weaver Lutz of San Diego, Ca., and Diane Weaver Cumberland of Fletcher, N.C.; eight stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces, Shirley Childs Ferguson of Richmond and Carolyn Haynsworth Childs of Midlothian; three nephews, Dr. Theron Baker Childs of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., Wade Douglas Childs Esq. of Jacksonville, Fl., and Thomas Baker Childs of Midlothian; four great-nieces, and four great-nephews. A memorial service will be held at Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems, where Mr. and Mrs. Weaver were married, on Friday, September 15, at 11 a.m., with visitation afterward. A private graveside service will follow at Historic Christ Church in Irvington. Mrs. Vernon retired from the Richmond Public Schools as a school nurse in 1988. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. degree in nursing in 1954. She was a member and had served on the vestry of Wicomico Episcopal Church. She is survived by a son, William Robert Vernon of Richmond; a sister, Betty T. Jackson of Williamsburg, and three grandchildren, Sarah Beth, John Robert and William Zachery Vernon, all of Richmond.
