Will of John Alderson, 1847 - Richmond Co., VA In the name of God Amen. I John Alderson of the County of Richmond and state if Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory thanks be to Almighty god for the same and calling to remembrance the immortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this writing to be my last will and testament in the manner and form as follows. 1st I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be punctually paid out of my estate as soon as may be convenant after my decease. 2nd it is my desire that there shall be no sale of any my estate, but to remain as I shall describe which is here mention in this artical. 3rd I lend unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Alderson during her life all my lands and plantation whereon I now live & the land Morgan & all my estate consisting of negro man James, stock of all kinds, that I may have wish there increase house hold and kitchen furniture & every thing I may poses at my death, my will & desire is that my wife as above named shall enjoy my estate in peaceable possession during her life. 4th After the death of my wife, I give to Patsy Harris one hundred dollars out of the whole of my estate, then divide the balance of my estate in half to be distributed as follows, I give the & bequeath unto my sister Mary Courtney for her only use, her husband not to touch it, one third my niece Mary Courtney one third & my niece Ann Alderson one third making one half my estate after the said hundred dollars is taken out for Patsy Harris, and the other half making my whole estate. I give and bequeath unto my wifes relations according to he request as follows, I give & bequeath unto my wifes sister Nancy Packet then sister Catharine Howe then Brother James Sorinuger (?)the other half of my estate to be equally divided between them I give to each one third making the last half of my estate. It is my will that the negro woman Betty be supported out my whole estate during her life, and lastly I do appoint my wife Elizabeth Alderson executor to this my last will & testament revoking all and every will or wills made by me heretofore either by word of mouth or in writing, in witness hereof I have here unto set my hand and fixed my seal this the 20th June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred forty seven.
