Cemetery Location:  On Huntington Court Blvd. .5 mile east of Lee Highway #11 
                    and 3 miles northeast of Roanoke, just east of the home of 
                    Mr. G. M. Clatterbaugh.
                    Roanoke Co., Virginia


DATE:

1825, date of oldest grave.

OWNERS:

Mr. G. H. Clatterbaugh, present owner. (1937)

DESCRIPTION:

It is a private burying ground on the old estate of the former owner, Elisha 
Betts.  It has not been used for many years.  A brick wall once surrounded the 
place, but little of it is left.  Trees and undergrowth now cover the place.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

Elisha Betts was at one time a large land owner and one of the early settlers; 
he built the palatial mansion, “Huntington” and in all probability was a soldier 
in the Revolutionary War.

The inscriptions are as follows:


Elisha Betts 
died March 14th, 1825
aged 62 years & 13 days.
He was the poor man’s friend
and a Father to the Fatherless.
Blessed is he that considereth the poor. The Lord will
deliver him in time of trouble.


Sarah Betts
born April 29th, 1772
died March 5th, 1857
A devout woman, and one that feared God,
full of good works and alms deeds.


Elizabeth Gurant
wife of Col. William C. Knight
and a daughter of Robert & Mary P. Dickinson of Inverness, Nottoway Co., Va.
Born March 7th, 1818
The darling of her family, the pride and joy of her husband
beloved by all who knew her.
She gently sunk to rest in all her loveliness Sept. 8th, 1849
in the full hope of a joyful resurrection.
