Sponaugle Cemetery Location: North of the town on Bonsack, Virginia, on a hill over- looking the town and community. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: About 1790. OWNERS: It is owned by the town and community of Bonsack, and is a perpetual reserve. DESCRIPTION: This is a very old cemetery and will date back to about 1790. It is fenced off mostly in family sections by iron, some wood, some cement. It contains about one half acre. It is a public cemetery, and very poorly cared for. (1936) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inscriptions: Sarah Wife of Jacob Bonsack and daughter of Michael & Susan Whitmore Died Oct. 15th, 1881 Aged 60 yrs., 8 mo., 22 da. Susannah Harshbarger Wife of John Bonsack, dec’d. Died Apr. 24th, 1888 Aged 89 yrs. Psa. 23:1 – “The Lord is my shepherd”. John Bonsack Born 1790 Aged 66 yrs. John H. Berry Died Feb. 6th, 1850 Age 63 yrs. There are many other graves much older, but there are no inscriptions and have only rough stones for markers. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Dr. J. S.
