Sponaugle Cemetery Location: 4 miles north of Roanoke, Virginia, on the west side of the Lee Highway on a hill, and near the intersection of the Salem and Hollins Road, south. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: 1843, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: The farm on which this graveyard is located is owned by H. H. Akers at the present time. (1937) DESCRIPTION: It was a private graveyard, and a small part is within a small iron fence where the Browns are buried. The rest of the graves are in the open field, and will number about thirty or more. There are only stone markers and no marks or inscriptions to make any kind of identification. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This family of Browns at one time were very wealthy and were large land owners. They were among the early settlers in this part of the county, possibly as early as 1790. The following inscriptions were found on a small monument within the iron enclosure. Joseph C. Brown died 1855, age 5 weeks Adaletta L. Brown died 1861, age 21-3 George T. Brown died 1843, age 2 years Benjamine F.
