Sponaugle Cemetery Location: North side Lee Hwy. at Hollins College, six miles North of Roanoke City, on a knoll South of the College. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: Land granted on July 25, 1746. OWNERS: Hollins College. (perpetual Reserve.) DESCRIPTION: It is a private burying ground for the Cocke family, and is enclosed with a brick wall 50 x 50 feet x 5 feet tall and is kept in excellent condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is located on the tract of land granted by George II of 150 acres on July 25, 1746. The College grounds comprise practically the entire tract. Charles L. Cocke, who is buried here, was the founder of Hollins College in 1846 and was actively connected with the institution for fifty-five years, until his death in 1901. He was the eldest son of James Cocke, a prosperous farmer of King William County, and was born at Edgehill, the family home, on February 21, 1820, served as Professor of Richmond College in 1840 and on December 31, was married to Susanna V. Pleasants, fifth child of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Pleasants, of Picquenocque, in Henrico County, Virginia. The older graves located here have no inscriptions but are known to be very old, just whom they are no one seeks to know, only the more recent graves have inscriptions, which include the family of Cockes who are buried here.
