ROANOKE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Howbert Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Howbert cemetery: 1936 Nov. 16 Research made by William C. Sponaugle Cemetery Location: 2 miles east of Salem, Virginia near the old Salem and Lynchburg turnpike, and six miles from Roanoke Virginia, on the north side and about four hundred yards from Peters Creek bridge in a northwestern direction. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: 1853, date of earliest grave (marker). OWNERS: It has been a private graveyard but is now included in a farm owned by Dr. B. C. Moomaw. (1936) DESCRIPTION: Briars and a small clump of trees grow over the graves in an open field, and it will soon be obliterated for the plowing comes nearer each year. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Nothing is known about the early settlers other than that some of them who owned this estate which was granted to Methuselah Griffith in 1756 by George II, were buried here.
