Johnston cemetery: 1937 July 28 Research made by William C. Sponaugle Cemetery Location: .5 mile South Hollins St., N. & W. Ry, and 100 yds. South side Franklin & Fincastle turnpike. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: Earliest date 1804. OWNERS: William R. Johnston DESCRIPTION: This must have been a private burying ground. It is now in the open with no fence or care of any kind in an apple orchard, there are at least six graves with no marks of identification except one, the rest have only stone markers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: William R. Johnston was a very wealthy man and owner of extensive lands, a prominent Atty., in his day, and the father of Frederick Johnston, who was an early Clerk of County Court Roanoke County for a number of years. I found the following inscription: Mary E. Dunn the daughter of William R. Johnston and Mary Johnston was born 21st June 1804 and died 28th May 1827 Aged 22 years, 11 months, and 7 days Thou are gone to the grave but we will not deplore thee, Since God was thy Refuge, thy Ransome, thy Guide, He gave thee, He took thee, and he will restore thee, death has no sting since the Savior has died.
