Sponaugle Cemetery Location: On west side of Route #116, and north of Mount Pleasant about one mile, and three miles east of Roanoke, Virginia, opposite Silk Mill, south, and south of the Roanoke River. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: Peter Kefawver was buried here as early as 1814, but there is no marker or slab. OWNERS: Patented to Peter Kefawver and Samuel Seagraves a certain tract or parcel of land for 200 pounds...1804 Peter Kefawver deeded to his heirs...1823 Peter Kefawver Heirs and descendants deeded to Roanoke Gas & Water Company, 27 acres for $20,000...1907 Roanoke Gas & Water Company, Salem, Virginia, present owners. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is enclosed by a cement wall, thirty by fifty feet and four feet high. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions are to be seen: Philip Kefawver Departed this life March 31, 1858 Aged 23 years, 6 days In Memory of Mrs. Eva C. Kefawver Wife of Daniel Kefawver Born July 2, 1835 Died April 8th, 1860 William Kefawver Died 1887 Peter Kefawver, Jr. Died 1874 Aged 96 years Susan Kefawver Wife of Peter Kefawver Died September 1881 The Kefawvers were of German descent and settled in this part of the county about 1800 or earlier; they were farmers. David Kefawver was preparing to enter college when the War Between the States broke out, and he enlisted in 1862, in Company I, 28th Regiment, Virginia Infantry Picketts Division, and served three years. He participated in the raid into Maryland, and took part in all the battles around Richmond, and was in active service when the War ended.
