Sponaugle Cemetery Location: A few hundred yards southeast of the present Norfolk and Western Railroad Station in Bonsack, Virginia, on a knoll over-looking the little town. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: It is owned by Dr. J. S. St. Clair, a direct descendant of Mr. George St. Clair, who purchased part of an earlier grant in 1792. It has continued in the direct family name to the present time. (1926) DESCRIPTION: It is well kept, surrounded by an iron fence, and owned as a private graveyard. It is more than a hundred years old (1936). Some graves have no markers with inscriptions. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inscriptions: J. F. Son of Palmer and Missoura St. Clair Born March 1859 Died Feb. 29, 1860 Palmer St. Clair 1819 – 1885 Missoura Tynes Wife of Palmer St. Clair 1831 – 1896 R. F. McNeal, Fincastle Rifles C.S.A., who came from Pennsylvania and espoused the Southern Cause became a devoted friend to the St. Clair family, was buried by them in their own graveyard, and honored as a member of their own family.
