Sponaugle Cemetery Location: 6 miles northwest of Roanoke, Virginia, and about one mile north of Vinton, near the Vinton Road, east side of the hill, and south of the Lynchburg and Salem Turnpike about one half mile and on the east side of the hill. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: The old graveyard may have been started as early as 1775. OWNERS: S. S. Vinyard. (1936) DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is a perpetual reserve, and is private. The condition is very poor (1936). Tombstones are broken down, some scattered, others are leaning, and some lying out in the field. There must be a hundred graves with no markers other than bare stones and others with none. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Trasher families were among the earliest founders of Methodism in Roanoke County.
