Sponaugle Cemetery Location: 3 miles north of Roanoke, Virginia, on the Harshbarger Road, Route #3, on a knoll over-looking the vast Watts’ estate. Roanoke Co., Virginia DATE: 1838, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Ellen C. Watts, the widow of William Watts III. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard includes about one eighth of an acre, enclosed with an iron fence. There are a number of very old graves and nothing on them to indicate who they were or how long buried. It is a private graveyard and is kept in a most excellent condition in every way. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: These are the inscriptions that may be found on the stones and markers: To our Father’s Memory Genl. James Breckenridge Wife of General Edward Watts Died July 8, 1862 Aged 69 years In Memory of Elizabeth Breckenridge Preston Daughter of Edward & Elizabeth Watts Wife of Thomas Lewis Preston Died Feb. 21, 1843 Age 21 years He giveth his Beloved Sleep In Memory of James Breckenridge Son of Edward & Elizabeth Watts Died Aug. 20, 1846 Aged 34 years God’s finger touched him and he slept. Henrietta Carter Daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Watts Born May 1837 Died Aug. 20, 1846 Aged 34 years The sacred child of our affection Tho gone where sleep...(not legible).
