Article on Death of Mifflin J. Ballard, 1917 - Roanoke Co. VA Salem, March 19, 1917 The people of Salem and vicinity were shocked this morning when the news was received of the death at 10:15 o'clock last night of Mr. Mifflin J. Ballard, which occurred at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. F.A. Lovelock. Mr. Ballard ws on his way to his home in Norfolk, after vising relatives and friends in Salem for sevral weeks, and stopped in Lynchburg with Mr. and Mrs. Lovelock when he was struck with a fatal illness, which was from paralysis. Mr. Ballard received the first storke on Friday morning which affected his entire right side. A few hours later his entire body was paralyzed, rendering him totally blind. After the second stroke, he became unconscious, not being able to recognize his children, all of whom were hastily notified by wire, and came to his bedside. His wife, who has been ill since the burial of her father several weeks ago, was unable to be with her husband. Mr. Ballard was born in Botetourt County and was a son of the late Mr. Allison B. Ballard. He was a resident of Salem since 1865 and was probably the best known citizen in the town, both amongh the people here and the traveling public, he having acted in the capacity of what is known as busman for thirty years or more, conveying passengers to and from the trains and has carried the mails for many years. Because of declining health he was forced to retire from this and all business. And last summer, one year ago, he went with his wife and daughter, Miss Grace, to Norfolk, where he has resided ever since. He was a man of cheeful disposition and alsways had a worf of cheek and a smile of sunshine with which to greet his numerous friends. he was loved by both young and old, and the news of his death has caused profound sadness among all who ever had the opportunity of knowing him and having been favored by him in his exceeding kindness towards all. He was a brade Confererate soldier, having served as a gallant and fearless member of his company thorughout the war between the North and South. He leaves behind his widow, who was Miss Virgiia Carper before her marriage, and the following children: Mr. J. Harry Ballard of Portsmouth, Va; Mrs. Lila Carper, Mrs. Nannie Graham and Miss Grace Ballard of Norfolk; and Mr. L.A. Ballard of Salem. He also eaves one sister, Mrs. John Parrish of Salem. The body was brought to Salem on the 3:30 o'clock train this afternoon, and funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.
