Will of Jacob Stevens, 1871 - Roanoke Co. VA Will Book I p.21 1785-1873 In the name of God,Amen- I, Jacob Stevens of Roanoke County, Virginia, do make the following as my last will and testament,revoking all others. First, I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid,for which purpose I suppose my personal property will be sufficient, after the payment of which I wish my estate to be divided and dispersed of as follows: If my land lying in the county of Nelson should not be sold in my lifetime I direct my executor hereafter named to sell the same as soon after my death as he can reasonably do so, and on such terms of payment as he may deem best, and out oif the proceeds pay to my son George Stevens the sum of $500 - and the residue of the purchase money is to be divided equally among six of my children and grandchildren as follows - 1/6 part to my son Robert Stevens, 1/6 part to my son James Stevens, 1/6 part to my son Jacob H.B. Stevens, 1/6 part to my daughter Betsey Campbell, wife of Cole Campbell, 1/6 part to my daughter Sarah Hildebrand, wife of Thomas Hildebrand, and anothert 1/6 to the three children equally of my deceased daughter Georgianna Stevens. I leave out my son Henry in the division of my estate, as I have already given to him his equal share. I give to my grandson Jacob, son of James Stevens my shotgun and shot-bag amd powder horn. To Mrs. Martha Stevens, wife of my son George Stevens, I give my trundle bedstead, bed and bedding. All other personal pleft at my death is to be sold by my executor. After the payment of my debts and funeral expenses, the residue of the proceeds thereof is to be equally divided amongst all of my eight children, including my son henry and the children of my deceased daughter Georgianna, they receiving the 1/8th part their mother would receive if alive. I hereby appoint my son George Stevens the executor of this my last will and testament and wish him to be reasonably compensated for his services as such. Johnston Jacob Neville At Roanoke County Court April Term 1873 The last will and testament of Jacob Stevens deceased was this day produced in court and partly proved by the oath of Frederick Johnston, one of the subscribing witnesses to the said will being dead. The said F. Johnston and Bernard Pitzer were sworn and deposed that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of the said Jacob Neville, and that his attesting signature as a witness of said will is his genuine signature, whereupon the said will is admitted to probate.
