Link of Washington, D.C. and Miss Clara Alice Spengler of Strasburg, Va. OBITUARIES [newspaper clipping] After a brief period of confinement to his bed, caused by a stroke of paralysis, Bro. J. P. S. Teaford ended a most successful career of Christian usefulness and entered upon that rest that remaineth for the people of God on the morning of August 27, 1902. He was a devoted member and consecrated elder of Bethany Lutheran church, Rockbridge county, Va. On account of his having been crippled by the effects of eheumatism for a number of years, he was unable to perform [ ] labor consequently he was a great reader. The greater part of his time, however, was devoted to the study of his Bible and Lutheran literature. He was therefore, throughly informed concerning the principles and progress of our Lutheran Zion, being at all times ready to give a reason for the hope that was in him. He was always willing, moreover, to give liberally of his means for the promotion of the cause so near to his heart, and was, therefore, from a practical as well as from a professional standpoint a tower of strength in his own congregation. Surely in his departure we sustain a great loss, yet in the midst of our sorrow we bow in humble submission to the gracious will of Him who doeth all things well, grateful for the fellowship that we have enjoyed with such a godly life. Is there not a promise to us in the words, "And their works do follow them" Is there nor great consolation for us in the thought that whilst he is removed from our midst, that removal means a calm and blissful rest to him from all the pains and labors of earthly pilgrimage, and yet the works do follow them." Workmen die, but the goes on." and we, the surviving comrades of a departed brother, as we combine our efforts to prosecute the work so dear to him, while working with us, will cherish the fondest recollections of his conserated devotion. May those memories ever be to each of us even greater incentives to service than was his counsel during his presence. Our desceased brother leaves two daughters, Mrs. L. L. Alphin and Mrs. Daniel Welch, to mourn his departure as well as a host of sorrowing relatives and friends, as was attested by the large concourse of people that followed his remains to their resting place. May God mercifully sustain them and all his children through the end. J. W. S. Celebrated Their Silver Wedding [newspaper clipping] Correspondence of the County News Alone Mills, Jan. 29- The beautiful country home, "Alone Spring" of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Alphin was the scene of a most delightful event Saturday, Jan. 27th, when they celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. Over guests assembled and after several hours pleasantly spent in social conversation and music both vocal and instrumental, a most tempting bullet course was served. This consisted of turkey and ham sandwiches, oysters, pickle, celery and fruit salad, after which ice cream, sherbert and four different kinds of cake among which was fruit cake two years old. This popular couple was the happy recipients of quite a number of beautiful as well as useful pieces of silver. All of Mr. and Mrs. Alphin's six children were present and nearly all of their numerous kinfolk, as this neighborhood is notes for large family connections and such an event can't help by prove a most happy and enjoyable occasion. Henry H. Teaford [newspaper clipping] Mr. Henry Hileman Teaford died at 2:21 o'clock Sunday, Jan. 3, at his home on upper Kerrs creek in this county. His death came after a critical illness of just one week. He had long been a sufferer from Bright's disease, which under careful treatment seemed to little impair his activities, the effects of which finally proved fatal. He died at an advanced age. He celebrated on June 2, last his seventy sixth birthday. He was [born] June 2, 1849 on the farm on which he died, on the 3rd at the home of his son, Frank B. Teaford. Mr. Teaford was of Revolutionary American ancestry. The family, which early settled in Augusta county was of Hugenot extraction. His father, Jacob Teaford, in 1845, changed his residence from [ ]w. Augusta county, to upper Kerrs Creek, where he purchased the farm on which he afterwards lived and his son, Henry, was born. The [ ]atter's mother was before marriage Felicia Greever. An elder brother of Henry Teaford, Lieutenant George W. Teaford, was a young soldier of the Confederacy, who was mortally wounded at Port Republic. Mr. Teaford leves a sister, Mrs. Julia A. Edmiston, living at Nevada, Mo. Mr. Teaford married Nov. 24, 1869, Miss Mary Martha Miller, daughter of John A. Miller of Natural Bridge. Their union was severed by the death of Mrs. Teaford which occurred Feb [ ]0 of last year. He left three sons, [J] Lloyd Teaford of Atlanta, Frank B. Teaford of Kerrs Creek, and J. Grover Teaford of Tomley, Ala. All of the sons were with their father at his bedside in his final illness. Mr. Teaford was buried in the Lexington cemetery at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. His funeral services were held at 1 o'clock at Kerrs Creek Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. His pastor, Rev. O. M. Anderson, officated, assisted by the Rev. C. E. Shifflet, pastor of the Baptist church. The casket was born by his three sons and three grandsons, Jacob F., Henry St. George, and John larew Teaford. The interment was by the side of the grave of his wife, and of a daughter, Sally Greever Teaford, who died in 1888 when just blooming into beautiful womanhood. The name of Henry Teaford has been conspicuous in county affairs in Rockbridge for well on to fifty years. His was a patriotic spirit. He was deeply devoted to his county, its interests and its people, and from his youth up unselfishly applied his time to work for their welfare. He possessed a striking personality, was of splendid physique, an attractive bearing; was gentle but of fine spirit and strong convictions. He had since Readjuster days been a leader among the regular Democrats of Rockbridge, and numbered many friends among the leaders of the party. The activities of his young manhood were centered about Buffalo district. In that period he lived in the Oxford church neighborhood, from which he returned after a few years absence to the old homestead on Kerrs creek. Mr. Teaford at times held public office though not an office seeker. He served in the internal revenue service in the county during the presidency of Mr. Cleveland, was a land assessor for his district, and for some time well administered the office of justice of the peace. [Untitled newspaper clipping] Died, June 15th 1878 near Kerr's Creek, Rockbridge Co., Va., Mrs. MARY E. TEAFORD, wife of Mr. Jacob T. S. Teaford, in the 38th year of her age. In the life and death of this estimable lady we have another instance of the power of the Divine Grace to support under the trials of life's afflictions, and to give comfort in view of death's realities. She bore with patience her sufferings, which lasted for several months, her disease being consumption, and with entire resignation calmly awaited the summons of the last messenger, death. Having been brought up in the bosom of a religious family, her father, Mr. Arthur McMasters, being a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church, she was early impressed with the importance of giving her heart to the Saviour. She consecrated her all to his service, and by her consistent walk, deep interest in the welfare of the Church, and her abiding concern for the salvation of her children, she proved the sincerity of that consecration. Unassuming in her deportment, amiable in her disposition, simple and cordial in her manners, gentle and lovely in her character and sincere in her piety, she won the esteem and secured the confidence of all and gave to the world an evidence of the elevating influence of the Christian graces to adorn the female character. Her body was consigned to its last resting place in the grave-yard near Bethany Lutheran Church, of which church she was a worthy member, after a sermon by the Pastor of said Church, delivered in the presence of an unusually large number of friends and neighbors. She left an affectionate husband and two grief-stricken little daughters and numerous relatives and friends to mourn her death. May the hand of affliction, though a heavy one, and though leading through a sorrow's night, prove to be a gentle [hand] guiding to realms of endless day. J. M. S. [untitled newspaper clipping] Charles Teaford Alphin was born June 24, 1894. As the shades of evening were falling November 18, 1915, he peacefully departed from the scenes of his earthly pilgrimage. He was a consistent member of Bethany Lutheran church, near Lexington, Va., having been received by holy baptism in infancy and confirmed at the age of fifteen by the Rev. J. Ira Coiner. For many months he was prosr[tr]ated by serious illness. Though conscious that the end was certainly near, he never murmured but gave evidence of a calm resignation to the will of God. One of the largest congregations that ever gathered in our church assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to the remains of the departed and express its sympathy for the bereaved family. After a brief discourse by the pastor [ ]on Job 16:22, the mortal remains were borne and laid to rest by tender hands at the church burying ground to await the final summons on the resurrection morn. May the stricken parents, sisters and brothers find sweet consolation in the fact that "All things work together good to them that love God." J. W. Shuey [untitled newspaper clipping] 1863 Died on the 5th inst., at his residence in Rockbridge Co., Va. Mr. ARTHUR MCMASTER. The deceased was a member and ruling elder in New Monmouth church. of modest and retiring disposition--greatly esteemed and confided in by those who knew him, as an honest, and upright man, a sincere and growing Christian, and a discreet and useful officer in the church of Christ. He died in great peace of mind, the soul willing that its earthly house of this tabernacle should be dissolved. In the joyful hope of going to dwell in that house not made with hands eternal in the heaven. Died on the 6th inst., at the residence of her husband in Rockbridge Co., Va., Mrs. MARY C. wife of Mr. David Lowman. Mrs. Lowman made a public profession of religion when quite young and adorned that profession by consistent Christian life. She was called in the providence of God to pass through many deep waters of affliction though still young, she had buried her father and mother and twin sister, and now she has gone, the last member of her family, to join her kindred in the skies. She was of a meek and quiet spirit which in the sight of God is of great price. The blessed Saviour whom she served was with her when she came to pass through teh valley of the shadow of death. He afflicted friends mourn in her loss, but they [ ] tained by the belief that she has safely [ ] her eternal rest. **********************************************************************
