Library of Congress #89-063731 Second Edition, 1990 Third Edition, 1995 ************************************************************************** -i- Preface This book is meant as an aid to genealogists and historians. Efforts have been made to keep errors down, stones were brushed with powder to enhance readability and most cemeteries were visited many times. An effort has been made to obtain data on unmarked graves. Death Records were checked for the years 1912-1917, as they stated the place of burial. I have spent many hours looking over microfilm of old newspapers and comparing obituaries to my index cards, as well as checking Church records when available. I took the liberty of including genealogical notes from my files and other sources, thus making this much more than just a cemetery listing. However, many of these additional notes are footnoted. In my research I found that many of the old tombstones are broken and/or fallen, most often never to be repaired. Many of the old cemeteries were in such a sad state that I only dared enter in very cold weather, for fear of snakes, bees and other vermin, not to mention the brush and brambles encountered. However, others were quite the opposite. I hope this work will be useful to those seeking their long lost ancestors and it is my intention to continue recording all the County cemeteries. Any information concerning cemeteries or unmarked graves is welcome and will be included in future volumes. I found the local folk to be very cooperative and friendly. I was was fortunate that everyone I encountered was very nice and helpful. I had to stop to ask directions many times for some of the off the beaten path cemeteries, and at each stop I learned some new item of value to my work. I thank everyone I talked with along the way! I always obtained permission before entering cemeteries and I suggest everyone do so. Without the assistance of many this work would never have been completed. Allene Owens of Lexington was like a right hand to me whenever I needed assistance or encouragement, she was always there, going as far as beating the brush and brambles with me at many of the old long forgotten cemeteries. Carmen E. Clark of Lexington was always there to encourage, advise, and provide information on cemeteries and the people of the past. Robert J. Driver, Jr. of Brownsburg was of much help with his enthusiasm of the project and sent information of locations as well as people contacts. Retta Horn of Raphine was also very helpful and came along on several outings to help record data. Seatta (Hartbarger) Teaford of Lexington, and Nellie (Teaford) Wood of Asheville, KY deserve special mention for their aid and interest in the Denmark area of the county. Clarence Wilhelm (an octogenarian) of Lexington was most helpful with his recollections of the Waterloo and Kerrs Creek area. Ivy (Chittum) Muterspaw and her son Leon were very helpful. Ivy's father had made coffins and she had been thoughtful enough to ask him of cemetery locations and burials before his decease (past age 90). Mrs. Joseph Kegley of North Buffalo, Lexington was very helpful with her recollections of the area as well as providing helpful contacts. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead Dunlap provided much helpful data on the New Monmouth area. Mike Flint and Jim Mays of Mays Real Estate deserve special mention as they collected information of locations for me. Jim even took the time to take me to some very difficult to locate cemeteries. Margie Camper of Virginia Military Institute's Preston Library was very helpful with my research as I constantly viewed the microfilm. Lisa McCown of Washington and Lee University Library, Special Collections was also very helpful. The staff at Rockbridge County Circuit Court; Bruce Patterson, Barbara Bowyer, Paula Byers, and Sylvia Coleman were always helpful and kind. Last and certainly not least, I have my husband Gary and my son, Jeremiah to thank for this project. They have put up with me as I piled index cards and files all over the house, neglecting many of my other household duties in the process. Jeremiah accompanied me to cemeteries and helped me to record and double check. Gary financed the project and provided me with a reliable vehicle to travel all over the county to the most remote areas with no worry of a break-down. Without the help of so many there was no possibility of the project's completion. ************************************************************************ -ii- Some abbreviations used within: s/o - son of d/o - daughter of w/o - wife of h/o - husband of (um) - unmarked grave m - month d - day y - year This book is dedicated to all those resting in unmarked or yet unlocated graves, may they be remembered. The 1995 edition excludes some of the previous genealogical information contained in previous editions. This leaves the reader to determine family connections. Cemetery records were consulted when available, particularly for Collierstown Presbyterian, Old Monmouth and New Monmouth Presbyterian. These records helped to reveal many unmarked graves, often including death dates and some relationships. The newspapers and death records listed in the bibliography were also useful in adding information regarding unmarked graves. These records should be consulted for further information. ************************************************************************** Table of Contents Cemetery Name page # Agner Cemetery (see House Mountain Chapel) Ailstock Cemetery 18 Alone Community Cemetery 106-111 Armentrout Cemetery 14 Armentrout Rapp Cemetery 14 Bane Cemetery 67 Bennington (Job) Cemetery 65-66 Bennington (Joette) Cemetery 65 Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery (see Alone Community Cem.)
