On 15 August 1845, Margaret Ruley decided to deed over some personal property to her daughter-in-law Polly Ruley, wife of John B. Ruley. This property was to be a means of supporting Polly and her children. A sale had been made of the farm and personal property of John B. Ruley. James Johnston, Pollyıs brother, had purchased all the personal property for $1.00. He agreed to let Polly Ruley have possession of this property as long as she remained in Rockbridge County. This property was to enable her to support herself and her children. If Polly were to decide to join John B. Ruley in the Western County, she was to be allowed to take the property with her or to sell them as she chose. However, her mother-in-law determined that ³in no event is the use of the property or the proceeds of sale to go to the hands of John B. Ruley.² Margaret signed this document with her mark. ************************************************************************** Rockbridge County, VA Deed Book Y, p. 405. 6 September 1845 R. H.
