Karnes/Davis Letter, 1848 - Rockbridge Co. VA Letter from Jacob Karnes to Lewis P. Davis and his wife, Manerva Jane Karnes Davis April the 10th 1848 Dear son and daughter I received your letter on the 8th of April which give me great satisfaction to hear that you was all so well and getting on so well with your work but it is more than I can say in answer to you we have had a very severe time with the hooping Coff. William lost his little child and we lost the little black child Susan in consequence of which has made us very backward we have just comm enced sowing oats and have but very little plowed for corn the balance of the children that had the Hooping Coff is all getting better the balance of the Family is all well. Cully Tinsley has got well And Mary A. Tinsley calls her daughter Sarah Frances Moriah has not got home yet we got a letter from her the same day we got yours and she says that she has not got more than half through her visit She is well all your Rilations in the valley is well so far as I know you inform me that you expects to be out to see us about the first of may at which time we would be very glad to see Jane but owing the hooping Coff I do not think it would be advisable to bring her little child for I think there would still be danger of taking it But as this difficulty is in the way you come and see us and some of us will try and go to see Jane nothing more at present but give my best respects to old Mr. Davis and family and except the same yourselves from myself and all the family Jacob Karnes April The above letter is addressed to: Mr. Lewis P.
