ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA - LETTERS - A.B. Wilmer to Mrs. Joseph Wilmer, 9 Aug 1853 ----¤¤¤---- Contributor's Note: One of our cousins found this letter on EBay and rescued it. The letter is fragile but in relatively good condition for something that's 150 years old. The envelope is of lesser quality and it is deteriorating. At this point, all I know is that it's not my grand uncle George Wilmer because it's to early to be written by his wife and he was not married to A.B. Wilmer. And it isn't my grandmother Anna Byrd Wilmer because she was not born until 1878 and she was married to E.C. Wilmer. Don't know who Joseph and Helen Wilmer are but A.B. is the aunt of one or the other of them, possibly by marriage. It is postmarked in Fincastle, VA -- Boutetort County and mailed to Scottsville which is near Charlottesville in Albemarle County. Any clues as to who this is and who the descendants might be are solicited. ----¤¤¤---- On the Envelope: Mrs. Joseph Wilmer Care of Luken Coles, Esq. Scottsville Albemarle Co. Va. Postmarked Fincastle, VA August 12 Text of the letter: Ridgeway, August Tuesday 9th 1853 My beloved Helen We returned from the Red and the old Sweet Springs on Saturday where George & Lizzie & I had been for about three weeks & I know you will be glad to hear that my health has been improved by the trip. While we were there we heard various reports about our dear Joseph - the state of his health, where he was, what arrangements he had made for his family during the summer, &tc. & I now write to beg the favor of you to let me hear on these subjects particularly & as much as your precious heart threads can give me in a long letter. Since we have been in the country, having no occupation and no cares, my thoughts have roved much among those I love especially & sometimes an intense longing to see my friends has come over me. Mary Anne wrote word that she thought Joseph would visit us & when we first went to the Springs I could not help hoping to meet him there, & vague hope has been hanging around my heart that you two might be induced to visit us at our home. Can you not come my dearest Helen? I do hope that our beloved Joseph is well enough to come & bring you and your children. I will not offer any apology for this note & for not writing more but only ask the favor again of a reply - May God Almighty ever be with & bless & comfort you & all dear to you, prays your affec. Aunt A.B. Wilmer P.S. George would write most cordially in begging you and Joseph to visit us - poor fellow he is not at home today - his spirits are very bad, but he is trying to do his duty & I hope that comfort will come to his heart. The girls write with me in warmest love to you both. Tell my beloved Joseph I do long to see him. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
