Declaration For Widow's Pension for Susan (Johnson) Conner, 1903 - Rockbridge Co. VA Act of July 1, 1902 State of Virginia, County of Rockbridge On this 30th day of January, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and three, personally appeared before me, John H. Welch, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and the State aforesaid, Susan Conner, aged 55 years, a resident of Rockbridge Baths, County of Rockbridge, State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain pension under the provisions of the ACT OF CONGRESS APPROVED June 27, 1890, AS AMENDED BY THE ACT OF MAY 9, 1900: ACT OF JULY 1, 1902. That she is the widow of James A. Conner who was enrolled under the name James A. Conner at Point Lookout on the 21 day of February, 1864, as a Private in Co. E 1 U.S. and honorably discharged Nov. 27, 1865, having served ninety days or more during the late war of the rebellion. That the soldier was not in the MILITARY OR NAVAL SERVICE of the United States except as stated above. That she was married under the name of Susan Johnson to said soldier at Rockbridge Baths, Rockbridge County, Va., on the 23rd day of September, 1866, by Rev. Wm. A. McDonald; that there was no legal barrier to the marriage; that she had not been previously married; that the soldier had been previously married and that his consort died 1857. That the said soldier died Jany. 21, 1903, at Rockbridge Baths, Va.; that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death; and that she is without other means of support than her daily labor and an actual net income not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars per year. That said James A. Conner left no children under sixteen years of age at time of his death. That she has not heretofore applied for pension. Late soldier's Ctf. # 473323. That she hereby appoints Soule & Co. of Washington, D.C., her true and lawful attorneys, to prosecute this claim, and directs that the sum of Ten Dollars be paid them for their services. Nuckols, residing at Rockbridge Baths, Va., and H.M. Mohler, residing at Rockbridge Baths, Va., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say they were present and saw Susan Conner, the claimant, sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her of 25 years and 30 years respectively, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; that she is without other means of support than her daily labor and an actual net income of not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars per year; and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Conner, dc., on this 11th day of March, A.D. 1903, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Susan Conner, aged 55 years, a resident of Rockbridge Baths in the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, whose Post-Office address is Rockbridge Baths, Rockbridge County, Virginia, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: "That I was not married prior to my marriage with James A. Conner and have not remarried since; that the said James A. Conner was married to Sarah E. Rea on February 23, 1854 and that the dissolution of said marriage was caused by the death of the then wife of the said James A. Conner (Sarah E. Conner) on April -, 1857, and that the said James A. Conner was married to me (who was Susan Johnson) on September 23, 1866, and that the dissolution of the last named marriage was caused by the death of the said James A. Conner on January 21, 1903. And that I am the owner of a tract of land near the Rockbridge Baths in said County of Rockbridge Baths (sic), containing about 26 1/2 acres and valued at about $250.00, and that my personal property amounts to about $75.00, nor have I any interest in stocks, bonds, investments, and that my income per month since February 3, 1903, amounts to nothing and that no person is legally bound for my support." On this 24th day of March A.D., 1903, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Susan Conner, aged 55 years, a resident of Rockbridge Baths, in the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, whose Post- Office address is Rockbridge Baths, Rockbridge County, Va., well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: "That my full correct and maiden name previous to my marriage with James A. Conner, my late husband, was Susan Johnson and not Susan Diana Matthews, nor can I understand why it was stated as such by the soldier or my late husband the said James A. Conner." Little Application For Accrued Pension - Susan (Johnson) Conner State of Virginia, County of Rockbridge: On this the 7th day of Feb., 1903, personally appeared Susan Conner, who, being duly sworn, declares that she is the lawful widow of James A. Conner, deceased; that he died on the 21st day of Jan., 1903; that he had been granted a pension by Certificate No. 473323, which is herewith returned; that he had been paid the pension by the Pension Agent at Washington, DC up to the 4th day of December, 1902; after which date he had not been employed or paid in the Army, Navy, or Marine service of the United States, except as a soldier to of (sic)U.S. to the above date; that she was married to the said James A. Conner on the 23rd day of Sept., 1866, at Rockbridge Baths, in the State of Va.; that her name before said marriage was Susan Johnson; that she had not been previously married; that her husband had been previously married and wife died in 1857; that she hereby makes application for the pension which had accrued on the aforesaid certificate to the date of death. She hereby appoints Soule & Co., Washington, D.C., her true and lawful attorneys to prosecute this claim. Her residence is Rockbridge Co., Va., Street, City of Rockbridge Baths, County of Rockbridge, State of Va., and her Post-Office address is Rockbridge Baths, Va. Witness Present: Susan (x her mark) Conner W. M. Nuckols? Jas. W. Foutz? Also personally appeared W.M. Nuckols?, residing at Rockbridge Baths, Va., and Jas. W. Foutz?, residing at Rockbridge Baths, Va., who, being duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Susan Conner sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they know her to be the lawful widow of James A.
