Conner, Pension Application Submitted by: Clyde F. Conner, Sr." Declaration For An Original Invalid Pension: State of Virginia, County of Rockbridge, ss: On the 30th day of July A.D., 1888, personally appeared before me Clerk of the County Court, a Court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid, James A. Conner, aged 53 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Jas. A. Conner who was enrolled as a Private in Jany or Feby, 1864, in Company E, Va. Volunteers, commanded by Captain Fay, and was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Ks., on the 27th day of November, 1865; that his personal description is as follows: Age: 53 years; height: 5 feet, 8 1/4 inches; complexion: dark; hair: black; eyes: grey. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty at Fort Rice in the Dakota Territory, on or about February, 1865, he was injured in the small of the back by the falling of a tree cut by a fellow soldier. That he was not treated in hospital nor by any surgeon in the service. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That he has not been in the military or naval service of the United States since the 27th day of Nov., 1865; that since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the County of Rockbridge, in the State of Virginia, and that his occupation has been that of a farmer; that prior to his entry into the service above-named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a Farmer; that he is now partially disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above descibed, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation, Edward P.? Fox, of Washington, D.C., his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. Conner, a Private of Company "E", 1 Regiment U.S. Inft (Rcbr) Volunteers, was enrolled on the 21st day of Feby. 1864, at Pt Lookout, Md. for 3 yrs, and is reported on rolls to Aug. 31/65 present; Sept & Oct 65 absent deserted Ft Rice, D.T.? Sept. 10/65. Mustered out Pvt. with Co. at Fort Leavenworth,-Kans. Nov. 27/65 with remark absent in arrest at Fort Leavenworth - Kans since Nov. 21/65. Ret. for Sept. 65 shows him deserted Sept. 6. Co. morning report for Sept.-12/65 shows him deserted. "All charges of desertion subsequent to Sept. 1st, 1865 against this man are removed under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved July 5, 1884. He was absent without proper authority from Sept-11 1865 to Nov. 21, 1865." The records of this office furnish no evidence of disability. R.C. Drum Adjutant General United States of America Department of the Interior Bureau of Pensions It is hereby certified that in conformity with the laws of the United States, James A. Conner, who was a Private, Co E, "1" Regiment, United States Volunteer Infantry, is entitled to a pension at the rate of Four dollars per month to commence on the First day of August, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight. This pension being for "injury to back". Given at the Department of the Interior this Twenty ninth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and ninety and of the Independence of the United States ofAmerica the one hundred and fourteenth. Conner who was a pensioner on the rolls of this Agency, under Certificate No. 473323, and who was last paid at $12, to Sept. 4, 1895, has been dropped because of Allowance under Gen. Feb. 9, 1903 Declaration For Invalid Pension State of Virginia, County of Rockbridge On this 22nd day of April, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-one, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public, within and for the county and State aforesaid, James A. Conner, aged 57 years, a resident of Rockbridge Baths, county of Rockbridge, State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical James A. Conner who was enrolled on the 21st day of February, 1864, in Co. E, First Regt., U.S. Vol. Infty, in the service of the United States, in the War of the Rebellion, and served at least ninety days, and was honorably discharged at Leavenworth, Kan., on the 27th day of November, 1865. That he is unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of Rhumatism and injury to his back. That said disabilities are not due to his vicious habits, and are to the best of his knowledge and belief, of a permanent character. That he has applied for pension under application No. (left Blank). That he is a pensioner under Certificate No. 473323. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. Signed: James A. Conner Attest: E. L.
