Arch Stuart Virginia Rockbridge County to wit: On this 14th day of september 1819 before me one of the Judges of the General Court of Virginia personally appeared John Green aged 67 years and resident of the County and State aforsaid and made the following Declaration on Oath (in order to obtain the provisions made by the State Act of Congress entitled An Act to Provide for Certain Persons Engaged in the Land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War) that the said John Green enlisted either in the month of January or February in the year 1776 in the County of Goochland State of virginia as a private soldier in the regular army of the United States on the Continental Establishement in the company commanded by Capt. Samuel Woodson of the l9th Regt. Virginia Line and that he remained attached to said company and the service of the United States until his discharge which he received on the 14th of December 1777. Signed by Brig. Genl. P. Muhlenberg and which discharge is herewith exibited which was given to him near the Gulph Mills in Pennsylvania and that while in said service he was in the Battle of Brandywine and White Horse and another the name of which he does not recollect, but was commanded in the same by Genl. Muhlenberg. This affiant further declared on oath that when he made his former Declaration on the 15th of Sept. 1818 herewith annexed and which was requested by the Department of War, that either his memory (which is frail) led him into a mistake in stating his enlistment to have taken place in the year 1775 and that the error was made by Wm. Parson who wrote his Declaration and that his memory is still uncertain as to preceise dates. His enlistment may have taken place somewhat sooner than have stated but is under the belief that he enlisted in one of the months heretofore stated, for the term of two years and that his discharge was procured by Major Loyd, one of the aids of Genl. Green, a short time before the term of his enlistment expired in order to accompany said Loyd in the capacity of a servant to his home. He further declares that he knows of no other evidence of his being in said service which is now living and that from his extreme indigous and reduced circumstances to old age he needs the assistance of his country for support.
