The prisoner is a member of the Virginia Military Institute, at Lexington; quite young, and without family or extensive family influence. His victim was a gentleman well known in the vicinity who had interfered with the attentions of the young man to a lady friend, and after causing her, by ridiculous and vague insinuations, to refuse his future acquaintance, called upon the young man, in company with a couple of friends, and avowed himself responsible for the wrong of which he complained. No collision then ensued. On the contrary, the young man appeared to submit to the affair quietly and expressed himself satisfied. The deceased then reported that "it was just as he expected. He (the prisoner) has not the courage to strike a child." This so strung his pride, that he armed himself, sought a second explanation, at night called the deceased from a party whom he had accompanied to church, aside, and struggle ensued which ended in a fatal stab. Both the prosecution and defence were conducted with distinguished legal ability.
