[©1997 All rights reserved.] ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** HENRY MAPP CARTER OBITUARY Submitted by Louise Perkins perkins@digital.net 13 June 1987-Lexington: Harry Mapp Carter, Sr., 80, died Thursday in a Lexington hospital. Born May 30, 1907 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Frederick King and Mary Susan Agnor Carter. Mr. Carter was a life-time member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as former treasurer and an on the administrative board. His first wife, Mabel Irvin Carter, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Gibson Carter, Lexington; two sons, Alvin Lane Carter and Harry Mapp Carter, Jr., both of Lexington; one sister, Mrs. Susie Bradley, Lexington; one stepson, Thomas W. Gibson, Sr., Covington; five grand-daughters; one step-grandson and one step-great-granddaughter. The funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pembrook Hall officiating. Burial will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Lexington First Aid Crew. CARTER Nannie Moore Carter, 89, of Lexington died Monday, Oct. 19, in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center in Buena Vista. She was born Dec. 3, 1902, in Lexington, daughter of the late John L. Moore Jr. and Emma Bell Smith Moore. She was married to the late William Lee Carter and was a member of the lexington Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary Post 1499, East Lexington Home Demonstration Club and the Church Circle. She is survived by one daughter, Doris Carter Halderman of Pinellas Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. at Harrison Funeral Chapel by Dr. L. Randolph Harrison. Burial will follow in Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery, Family night is tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 9 at the Harrison Funeral Home. He was born November 19, 1909 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Houston David Cummings and Effie Black Cummings. Mr. Cummings was a retired owner and operator of the Safeway Cleaners. He was a member of the Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Cooke Cummings, in 1986. He is survived by one stepson, Frank E. Cozza of Falling Springs; one brother, Delbert Cummings of Lexington; and one stepgrandchild. He was preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers. The funeral service will be conducted from the graveside at Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. Leroy Young officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Falling Springs Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society. She was born in Sidney, Nova Scotia October 29, 1911. She was a retired machine operator for Warner Brothers Undergarments and a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, James Clarence Cummings; a son, Frank E. Cozza of Falling Spring; three sisters, Mrs. Margie Russo of Stamford, Conn; Mrs. Irene Spleitz of Wallingford, Conn; Mrs. Olive McMannus of Derby, Conn; a grandson and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. John T. Martin, Jr. officiating.
