LEIGHTON PASSES AWAY Submitted by: ChazTuna (ChazTuna@aol.com) Mrs. Rachel Ann Leighton passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. F. Catlett in Prospect Street this morning at 7 oÕclock at the ripe of age of 80 years, after a lingering illness of about a year. Mrs. Leighton was a native of Bedford County, but had lived in Covington for the past thirty years. She was the widow of Lewis E. Leighton, who served in the Confederate Army under General Lee. He preceded her to the grave a number of years ago. Mrs. Leighton had made her home with her daughter for several years and she was a devoted and affectionate mother and grandmother, and all during her illness she seemed to find especial comfort in the presence of her grandchildren. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. W. W. Jackson, Mrs. C. F. Catlett and Mr. J. E. Leighton, of Covington; Mr. A. R. Leighton, of Clifton Forge, and Mr. O. S. Leighton, of Rockbridge, and two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Rice, of Buchanan, Va., and Mrs. W. S. Worley, of Glasglow as well as nineteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Catlett home at 2:30 oÕclock Wednesday afternoon by Rev. B. Franklin Skinner of the Covington Baptist Church. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The following will serve as pallbearers: Her grandsons being the active pallbearers: Active-Bill Catlett, Charles Jackson, John Leighton, Wilbur Leighton, Mack Leighton, Alvin Leighton. Honorary-John Hanson, George Matheney, S. F. Matheney, Winfred Hodges, J. E. Jackson, wife of Mr. W. W. Jackson, of Prospect Street, popular Covington resident, which occurred at Glasgow, Va., at 3:45 oÕclock Monday afternoon, came as a distinct shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Jackson had gone to Glasgow to attend the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. W. S. Worley, where she was stricken with apoplexy, living only a short time following the attack. Mrs. Jackson was born May 12, 1883, in Rockbridge County, the daughter of Lewis E. and Rachel A. Leighton. She had spent the past thirty years of her life in Covington. Mrs. Jackson was married to Mr. Jackson on December 24, 1907. To this union four children were born: Mrs. Evelyn Jackson Wade, Charles Jackson, Ruth and Rachel Jackson, all of whom, with her husband, survive. One sister and three brothers also survive: Mrs. C. F. Catlett and Mr. J. E. Leighton, of Covington; Mr. A. R. Leighton, of Clifton Forge, and Mr. O. S. Leighton, of Greenlee, Va. Mrs. Jackson had been a member of Covington Baptist Church since a very young woman, where she was an active worker in the WomenÕs Missionary Society and other organizations of the church. She was also a member of the WomenÕs Bible Class, taught by Mrs. T. L. Christian. Funeral services will be held from Covington Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 5 oÕclock. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Rev. Ernest L. Honts will conduct the service. Pallbearers will be: Active-C. R. Barnes, E. G. Robinson, H. W. Fitzgerald, W. M. Harmon, K. G. Jackson, wife of Mr. W. W. Jackson, of Covington, who died at Glasgow Monday afternoon, were held yesterday afternoon from Covington Baptist church at 5 oÕclock. Rev. Ernest L. Honts conducted the service and interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. A large gathering of friends and relatives attended the service, many of them from out of town. The floral pieces were numerous and beautiful and were tokens of the high esteem in which Mrs. Jackson was held. ********************************************************************
