ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA - WILLS - Christian Echard, 9 Mar 1857 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Rockbridge County, Virginia Will Book Vol. 15, p. 171 I, Christian Echard, of the County of Rockbridge, being in low health of body, but of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows: In the first place, I desire that my body may be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named. Secondly - I will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as practicable after my decease and suitable grave stone erected at my grave, and also at my wife's grave. Thirdly - I will and desire that all my estate, both real and personal of whatever nature or kind be sold to the best advantage and divided equally between my eight children now living, to wit, John, William, Elizabeth, Martha, Caroline, Frances Joseph and Mary. Subject to the following changes and bequests as follows. It is my wish that my son John be charged with the sum of one hundred and twenty six dollars as already received . My son William with the sum of one hundred and twenty two dollars and fifty-one cents. My daughter Martha with the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars and twenty one cents. My daughter Caroline with one hundred and fifty five dollars and thirteen cents. Fourthly - I will to my grand daughters Martha An and Amanda Cox the sum of twenty five dollars each, when they arrive at the age of twenty one years. It is further my will and desire that my grand daughters named above will not have any other portion than the bequeath named above. Lastly, I constitute and appoint my sons John C and William Echard executors of my last will and testament, revoking all other former wills or testaments but the foregoing as my last will and testament. I have hereunto inscribed my name and affixed my seal this ninth day of March eighteen hundred fifty seven. [1857]. The last will and testament of Christian Echard, deceased was produced in Court, proved by the oaths of James Henry and Harvey Hantson, subscribing witnesses and thereunto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of John C Echard and William Echard, the executors named in said will, who made oath … and together with William B. Dixon, William William, JosephEchard and John B. Dryden, their securities, entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of ten thousand dollars, conditional according to law, certificate was granted them to obtain a probat thereof in form.
